Walter Shapiro reflects on his decision in 1968 to vote third-party rather than to vote for Hubert Humphrey. This was, he now sees, a "self-righteous decision to opt out of the two-party system" he made "out of misplaced antiwar passions."

And, of course, his third-party protest vote enabled tricky Dick Nixon, a warmonger if there ever was a warmonger, to gain the White House.

@wdlindsy I know a few who voted for Ralph Nader and deeply regretted it after the election!

Every now and then I hear conversations from outside of here about "the state of social media" and let me tell you: People are suffering. People are miserable. Many people feel addicted to social media but unable to have positive and valuable interactions in the space. Mostly, in the profit-driven social media space negative emotional reactions glue eyeballs as well as positive, so a heap of the experiences is just ... unpleasant.

Meanwhile around here things are different.

@futurebird @sidereal That would be interesting. But we still drown in them in real life.

There was some kind of work party and I only make myself go to one per year tops and I did mine already. Listening to people who “had a good time” mystified and having several panic attacks because people “missed me there” and can’t tell if they are being angry, nice, or what.

I like my coworkers I just wouldn’t ever consider having some roving conversation and drinks and dinner anything but stress. I wish I could just explain this but someone always takes it the wrong way.

@futurebird It's odd that too many people cannot understand a simple fact:
"You are not me."
They don't know and can't imagine why you are not exactly like them.

Every app on the Internet is a potential spam tool and security risk, plus a leaker of your personal data. It's always a compromise, whatever you do here.
-- HOWEVER
You're better off on Mastodon, than say, Facebook, Instagram, Threads (depending on the app, if you're mobile) for most of those risks.

Lots of Fediverse Admins are making it VERY clear they have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the protocol works and that's VERY worrying....

If you don't even understand how something works, how can you even begin to admin an instance properly?

There's definitely a legitimate reason to defederate from the BlueSky bridge. You may not trust corporations and that's PERFECTLY FINE!

But don't disguise it as some sort "opt-in only stance" because if you're a legit Fediverse admin, you know the Fediverse as a whole is opt-out by design.

Either you know that and are misrepresenting the truth to dogpile on a dev unnecessarily or you don't know that and running an instance is irresponsible of you.....😬yikes...

Disinformation isn't just a political thing... it's a human thing.

Retired old people who aren't just ... busy being sick and dying give back to their communities in HUGE ways. We had someone's grandpa come to our robotics competition to cheer the team on. The old people in my building do all the serious political organizing and man the polls. I'm too busy working being in my 40s and all that.

Raising retirement ages takes away more than just "retirement" ... it makes everything harder.

Far as I'm concerned it should be 59.

@futurebird Before retiring, I was busy with my own "mom and pop" business. Since retiring, I'm more busy now than ever. Every time I see your pseudo, I think of this:
