The corporate media do much to withhold information from us that would, if we had this information, help us see that the serious dysfunction in D.C. and the federal government is virtually entirely due to Republican obfuscation driven by a politics of authoritarianism.

In not highlighting this information and making it central to the narrative of the 2024 election, the corporate media allow too many of us to claim ignorance as we make our voting choices.

The price of Huggies diapers went up 6% between April- June 2023.

Inflation, right? Wrong.

Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, reported that the cost to make its products fell by $75 million. They took the money and ran, banking $168 million in operating profits in Q3 2023.

Now, new research shows that corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023. During the 40 years prior to the pandemic, profits drove just 11% of price growth.

Robert Reich on why only the rich and powerful can go bankrupt:

"Bankruptcy was designed so people could start over. But these days, the only ones starting over are those with enough political clout to shape bankruptcy laws to their liking, and enough money to hire bankruptcy lawyers to use those laws to their full advantage."

Free book

The End of Loser Liberalism.
Chapter 1

. . .

The political system and the “free market” are rigged to the advantage of the rich and powerful, which makes it difficult for progressives to make headway in pushing policies that advance the interests of everyone else.

There are enormous obstacles in our path, but if we don’t know where we are going, then we can be absolutely sure that we are not going to get there.

which is why progressives have chosen to deprive the people of their choice in elections

and break laws they don't like

and hold kangaroo courts for their political enemies

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

if that is true, then it would be just one of many cycles we have to recognized in life

    and learn to adapt to

    the business cycle

I highly recommended Cannibal Capitalism to @academicchatter and @bookstodon. I remember reading in undergrad. I don’t think I cited her as often in grad school but that is another story. Cannibal Capitalism is written for a mass audience but what is overwhelmingly obvious is that she has mastered her craft of inserting large complex ideas into concise language. It is a masterwork.

What is something you have learned you wish you could have told your younger self... but, you also know your younger self would never believe you?

    Here are mine:

    • Even if you are a smarty pants you still need to study, probably a lot.
    • Brush your teeth twice a day. Not once. TWICE.
    • The few things about your appearance you have (some) control over are not very important in romance.
    • No, you really do need to sleep.
    • Don't just study what's hard & impressive study what fascinates you.
