i continue to hold the opinion that the only way you're gonna get everyone to use alt text is to actually integrate it with the experience for sighted users:

• all users should be able to interact with alt text easily, in a form that's friendly to font scaling and copy-paste

• it should be searchable (this is a killer feature — now you can find your old art/memes/photos using simple text search!)

• the alt-text indicator should never cover up part of the image, that's a huge anti-pattern

@saddestrobots i haven’t been posting much like this lately but when I do a “im doing a thing, watch me doing the thing thread”, i mention in the OP that i am adding additional details and commentary in the alt text which makes each post have twice the utility and normalizes sighted people looking forward to consuming it

this morning, a friend of mine posted that he liked having a console because his games just worked (context: low-effort fun while he's recovering from cancer), and someone angrily quote-skeeted him to say that consoles were for losers who are afraid of options

but they lost the thread about what those "options" were supposed to be (mods, peripherals, &c.) so they just started saying how great it was to fuck around with your graphics setting in the menu

@saddestrobots i “upgraded” my sister-in-law’s computer from a first generation Core i5 to a third generation Core i7 equivalent so she could get access to software that requires AVX1. this means Starfield runs. i peeked at her graphics settings and cringed. but it doesn’t matter, she’s happy and content because she can play it. she’s right.

    a friend of mine worked at a chatbot company before the whole LLM bubble

    • it was a cartoon character
    • the bot had clear limits about what it would talk about vs. what was just "i can't do that" or "sorry, i'm only really interested in {the thing i do}"
    • half the team was writers and an artist
    • the writers had a 'character bible' to try to keep its personality and lore consistent over time

    now everyone's just shoveling lies over the wall instead

    @vegetablegremlin i spoke to my ergonomics guy when i took my last enterprise gig and i asked for the real dope and he single 4:3 display pulled me. i already kinda knew it but he confirmed. i reduced down to one display at home and moved my bookshelf speakers closer and haven’t been happier
