Red Lanterns

A photo of the lovely flowers of 'Callianthe megapotamica', known as Tyrolean lamps in Japan. They are shaped like red hot air balloons, or round balloons like lanterns. The inflated paper lantern is a contrast of red and yellow, with what looks like the fluffy tail of a cat emerging from its round bulge. This slightly backlit photo was taken at sunset.

    I've never thought of you as stinky and most of all I love the hexagonal shape of your body.

    This is a picture of a sheild bug on a flower bud. Their hexagonal bodies are wrapped in a brown gradient with small white spots on the head. Their two flexible antennae are gently curved and point outward from their bodies. The slight golden color in their touch is very nice. They don't give off that famous stinky smell unless they are attacked by others.

    Sudden encounter in a residential area.
    This moment, I got the exclamation mark on my head and on theirs!

    Two ducks resting beside a narrow waterway in a residential neighborhood. I usually see them in large ponds and rivers. But it is very rare to see them in the tight confines of a residential neighborhood lined with houses. They hide their rounded, chocolate to café-latte gradient bodies well beside concrete and dead branches.

    This is a photo of the yellow flowers of St. John's Wort. Their abundant stamens extend upward like delicate threads. Round beads of pollen are carefully attached to the tips of the yellow threads. The white pollen is lifted by its tentacles and directed toward the pistil. They may be the tentacles of ohmu〜王蟲.( Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind)

    Close-up photo of the same penstemon. They are elongated pale purple bells. Or is it the three split tongue of a punky snake? The unique shape of the flower brings different impressions to each viewer. But they are just living and standing in a shady and inconspicuous place.

    This is a picture of Penstemon flowers. Their long stems grow straight up from the ground, with leaves and many bell-shaped flowers at each node of the stem. The pale purple bells face outward on their stems. Those long, thin bells look like the face of a snake. Its wide-open mouth is flared out with a white, fluffy, hairy tongue. Split into three, the split tongue is punkish and cool.

    spider and cicada, the best of friends

    a zoom in on the spider now. it is now in focus and has long front legs and shorter back legs. its front have is orange and back half is brown. the cicada lurks in the corner of the frame out of focus

    Pictures of Lampranthus spectabilis flower. They have many narrow petals and bloom in a circle around the nucleus of the flower. The petals are dark pink, but glistening white in the sunlight. The nucleus of the flower is round and raised with yellow pollen. The background is a blur of their fleshy thick green leaves.

    Actually Yesterday I saw this woodpecker in the woods with a non-red head. (Japanese Pegmey Woodpecker〜kogera)
    Their body stripes were beautiful.
    But I could only take blurry pictures of them from a distance.
    The sound of their little beaks as they pecked was nimble and very lovely.
    I feel especially lately that it is really difficult to take clear pictures of birds.

    In the 1970s, Japanese rice cookers and electric kettles were designed with roses in psychedelic hues like this one.
    It is a very nostalgic feeling.

    This is a photo of colorful rose blossoms taken in a neighboring town. Compared to previous years, the roses seemed to bloom earlier this year. Most of the roses were past their peak bloom time, but large bright orange-toned roses were in full bloom along the roadside fence. They looked like cheap and pretty illustrations of roses and reminded me of the many retro appliances I had in my childhood home.

    'I keep molting.
    To become a shiny cool compact car that can fly.
    But right now I'm still a baby.
    So I'm taking a nap wrapped in a wafer paper-like blanket.' 🐞

    This is a photo of the young ladybugs before they become adults. This was taken from the right rear of their bodies. Their limbs (or mouth) on the yellow-green upper leaves of the Periwinkle are as lovely as tiny whiskers.

    Here is a picture of a Nami Tentoo (ladybug) before they are still in their full form. They cling to the soft leaves and molt repeatedly, even in strong winds. The back, where the ladybug's black spots are gradually appearing, is still covered with a thin skin. They will soon show their shiny feathers and fly freely. A few more days will pass.

    I have been off dyeing my hair gray for 4 years now.
    So this is my natural hair color! I've been dying my gray hair black or brown since I was young, so once I got free of that it was a lot easier. Ha!

    Dyeing your hair and changing the color is fun! I loved it too.
    The process of growing my hair out was a struggle. I struggled with hair turbans and hats when there was a clear contrast between my dyed black hair and the gray of my natural hair.
    I was happy when most of my hair finally turned gray after time. But I'm only 54, so I'm just trying to defy gravity and take care of my facial skin so I don't age. Haha! (But spots and wrinkles are natural, right?) 😭

    This is kind of a terribly long post! Sorry, val! 🙏😂

    We planted some Japanese maple trees last Fall, and this is the first time I see their Spring growth. The leaves come in like folded paper fans and then they unfold.

    Deep pink Nadeshiko flowers are in full bloom.

    This is a photo of the many nadeshiko flowers blooming in my small garden. They bloomed all at once with the warmer temperatures. The deep bluish pink flowers have jagged petals. The background is a blurry wooden lattice fence.

    This is a close-up of a dark pink nadeshiko flower. The five jagged petals look like a ball of dressed-up herons. Three small umbrellas are visible around the petals, curled up and closed. These are the buds that will soon bloom. Ten thin white pistil pollen antennae protrude from the center of the flower.

    This is called "Nanja Monja-no-ki" in Japan.
    That meaning is
    "A tree of What is this?'' haha!
    This tree is a bit rare in Japan.
    So it probably got its name from a word casually muttered by someone who saw it for the first time. 🤭

    I photographed a Chinese fringetree with petals falling to the ground. They were each uniquely shaped and looked like ancient hieroglyphs that had fallen and scattered.

    This is a picture of a Chinese fringetree tree. Its large tree has long, thin, thread-like white flowers. Those white thin fringes are loosely curled facing this way and that. The white flowers in clusters are very pretty, swaying in the wind. This tree is a rare species in Japan. I saw this for the first time, especially in the Kanto area where I live. They are mainly found in the Kyushu region of Japan.
