"Moderation tools are nonexistent on here. It also eats up storage like crazy [...] The software is downright frustrating to work with" - Can any other instance admins relate to this?

After a year online the free speech-focused instance 'Burggit' is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...

Only the storage usage has been a problem for me, but that is much easier to handle now. I do wish there was some better documentation for exactly that.

Doorbell kamera solution

Hi, anyone have any good self hosted solution for a doorbell camera? What I need is to have the option to look at who is at the door and be able to actuate a lock (relay operated). I have a cheap Chinese brand solution, but it uses an unknown cloud solution and is very unreliable. A phone app would be fine, but if there's a...

I use a Ubiquiti doorbell, which operates locally. However you do need some extra equipment to set it up.

I prefer laptops, because they are mobile and doesn’t take up much space.

Could probably be because Norway is not part of the EU, but I’m sure Norway is just around the corner as well.

Doesn’t .com mean “commercial” and that doesn’t fit his project at all.

Go to Namecheap.com and play around with their domain generator. There’s plenty of none-ccTLD’s to choose from.

Depending on the project, you could find a gTLD that fits your project.

.tech
.dev
.app

This is a setting by the admin of that Pixelfed instance. Try another instance, if you are unhappy with the quality.

Not natively in Pixelfed.

Also consider that Instagram uses aggressive image compression and then you import from that to Pixelfed, which also does its own compression. No wonder the quality is questionable.

Have you tried adding an original image to Pixelfed?

In Sweden and Denmark, where I am from, it’s technically illegal to not be provided with a roof over your head. But as you say, some people just can’t live in a home, for various reasons. Some even choose to be homeless or more precisely; be a vagabond.

You can disable P2P.

You will only see content from other instances, if your instance federates with them.

However, some instances allow “global search”, which means you can practically find everything through search, from all the other instances.

It’s also possible to subscribe to channels from other instances, even though your instance does not federate with said instance.

If you go to the About > Network page, you can see which instances is federated with yours.

This is how the settings look like for a PeerTube admin, regarding global search and subscribing to remote channels:

Look for this, under the about page of the instance.

Who need that much storage on their phone? Honestly asking.

I like how Lemmy looks simpler and more lightweight. Also Kbin is trying to do 2 things instead of focusing on one thing and I don’t think that’s a good idea.
