I'm pretty sure their ad revenue from their own pages is a tiny fraction of their overall advertising revenue... They basically own the advertising market online, almost anywhere you see ads googie is getting a cut

laurelraven ,

And exactly where do you propose they talk about it and actually have people see it?

Tesla is recalling its Cybertruck for the fourth time to fix problems with trim pieces that can come loose and front windshield wipers that can fail | The new recalls each affect over 11,000 trucks ( apnews.com )

The company says in the documents that the front windshield wiper motor controller can stop working because it’s getting too much electrical current. A wiper that fails can cut visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. The Austin, Texas, company says it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the problem....

laurelraven ,

I'm seeing that a hell of a lot this year... Linux might actually finally make some real headwind with the tech crowd

laurelraven ,

Oh, that's okay though, you signed them the rights to do that by having an account with them

... I'm sure is how they'll spin it

laurelraven ,

So you want to throw a brick through OneDrive's Windows?

laurelraven ,

Give it a go, it was surprisingly not as big an issue as I thought it would be, even for gaming (though not perfect for gaming, I've been able to get things working without too much headache at least)

laurelraven ,

When I rebuilt mine a few months back, I got two drives so I could put windows on one of them, and mounted my old drives for the same reason... I've barely touched the old data and the second SSD has not even been formatted yet, and when I do it'll probably be to give my current system more space

Arrowhead CEO says Helldivers 2 balancing patches have 'gone too far' recently: 'It feels like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed' ( www.pcgamer.com )

Replying to a player on Twitter who said recent patches have made the game "unplayable," Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt conceded that he's not satisfied with his studio's current balancing approach....

laurelraven ,

I'm pretty sure targeting a shot so splash shrapnel goes somewhere beneficial to you is not an "exploit" so much as "good tactics" in the same way that aiming for a weak spot to do extra damage is...

laurelraven ,

I think they were referring to the ones who voted to ban it

laurelraven ,

I don't know if I've ever heard the initialism AMV or not (though I've watched plenty of them), but even not knowing what it was it was pretty easy to figure out from context (though i thought "animated" instead of "anime", but close enough anyway)

Some acronyms and initialisms, I don't really get why they're so hard for people, especially in context

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

laurelraven ,

SnagIt!

Flameshot is great, but it lacks too many features I've come to depend on from SnagIt! and I would absolutely pay for a Linux port even if it isn't FOSS

laurelraven ,

Depends on what airline you're taking, Southwest doesn't assign seats

laurelraven ,

I actually kind of dislike the assigned seating at movie theaters myself. It now doesn't matter if i go early, the theater might already be nearly booked. The only way around this is to either make two trips to the theater or pay extra to buy online.

On the other hand, it does eliminate any rush to get there early once you have the ticket

laurelraven ,

Honestly, if they didn't charge extra I'd probably not be so annoyed, but the theaters around me all add like a $3 "convenience" fee for booking online, which is complete bs since it's actually saving them money not needing to keep as many people working

Capitalists will capitalist, though

laurelraven ,

I think i would legitimately just leave the site and block it at my pihole if i saw that

laurelraven ,

Great, so now we get to pay for the privilege of having our data harvested by 814 "partners"

Remember: "if you aren't paying for the product then you are the product" is no longer accurate, you're the product regardless of paying or not now.

laurelraven ,

But most will anyway. Why leave extra money sitting on the table?

laurelraven ,

I'm pretty sure most of the Southwest fleet is more than 7 years old

laurelraven ,

Or see that and think "they'll have better opportunities going to a better university" when for the most part people don't really care where you got the degree, just that you did, it's vaguely relevant, and accredited

If you can do that for a fifth the cost and no outstanding debt, seems foolish to pay what the big unis are commanding

Also, congrats to your kid, that's a great field to be in right now

laurelraven ,

I know of plenty who are more than happy to talk about that

laurelraven ,

I prefer the headphone jack to be Bluetooth, honestly... Haven't had a physical port in many years and found I didn't miss it at all

laurelraven ,

Sure

But why would I care if I'm not going to use it?

Honestly, I don't care if all my phones going forward start having the port again, I'm sure it'll make a lot of people happy, but I'll still likely be using Bluetooth because it's just more convenient for me

Which was the point. That I feel like you missed. Or misinterpreted. Either way... Cool?

laurelraven ,

Could I be a Social Justice Bard instead? Or maybe a Social Justice Warlock...

laurelraven ,

Well, adding ads could easily be that very bad decision, if anything can position itself as an attractive alternative fast enough

laurelraven ,

I asked it how to get rid of it.

It decided my aggressive language was not okay and kept ending the "conversation" which only managed to piss me off even more.

If I want to curse at my f$king computer, I'm going to curse at my f$king computer. I paid for the damned thing, and it is a thing, not a person, I can yell at it all I want and not hurt it in any way so this policing of what we can say to it is all the more bizarre to me.

laurelraven ,

Shouldn't have to, it should be something to enable or better yet install

laurelraven ,

It's okay, I've already switched to Linux

laurelraven ,

Win11 got me to finally get off my ass and switch to Linux... it's just so invasive, and the way it eats up resources is flat out irresponsible.

laurelraven ,

I disagree for 3 things: UAC, PowerShell, and general driver abuse loopholes being closed and making security not a joke

I will also say from my personal experience there are a fair number of QOL improvements in the UI, but they kind of threw most of them away with 11, but hey, at least we get tabbed explorer... Which I still can't figure out any real use for, especially the way it's implemented...

The House GOP just gave Biden’s campaign a huge gift: Roughly 80 percent of House Republicans just lined up behind a plan to cut Social Security and ban all abortions ( www.vox.com )

Donald Trump would be on track to win a historic landslide in November — if so many US voters didn’t find him personally repugnant....

laurelraven ,

Just throwing this out there: it's not so easy for everyone, red states in particular love to add roadblocks to it including closing so many polling places that voters at the remaining places will likely face many hours of standing in line, particularly in areas more likely to vote blue, and have even passed laws making it illegal to shuttle people to the polls or pass out water to people waiting to vote.

laurelraven ,

Which many people, unfortunately, consider a good things

laurelraven ,

And sadly, a lot of voters don't understand that, just "I got relief from Trump and got it taken away by Biden" and no amount of explaining will get them to see what really happened

laurelraven ,

And have pretty much always been that way, at least in semi recent memory, and the GOP have used this fact constantly by taking credit for their Dem predecessors' economic policies and by the time the negative impact of their policies start to be seen, the Dems are back in power and the GOP blames them for the hardship

The average voter does not and apparently will never understand that economic policy takes years to fully see and feel the impact

laurelraven ,

Starfield, which I don't get the sheer magnitude of rancor it gets... It's not perfect, but it's still a good game, and none of its issues are "unfixable", no matter how much its haters want to believe they are

Genuinely had a lot of fun with it and looking forward to content updates, as well as yes bug fixes and gameplay improvements (I did say it's not perfect, but none of Bethesda's games were really better at launch and most of them got slammed initially too)

laurelraven ,

You mean digging it even deeper than they already did with this?

laurelraven ,

For a supposedly anonymous site that's going to be a target from both hackers and companies looking to reveal that data, I'd say it's not really any better, just delayed. All it takes is someone finding a SQL injection vulnerability on the site to scrape the user database, or a court to rule that they have to turn that data over to a company looking to go after an employee, or even just someone with the right access at the company clicking the wrong link

If you want to be anonymous, the first step is to not give people your name or other PII

laurelraven ,

I mean, if a Christian or other religious person goes into an atheist community and is shocked to find their belief being ridiculed there, I don't know what to tell them

laurelraven ,

Something not by one of the more well known authors I could recommend are the Indranan War trilogy and Farian War trilogy, by K. B. Wagers

Also, The Frontiers Saga series by Ryk Brown is fantastic, and I think getting close to 40 books by now

laurelraven ,

I mean, I love cauliflower (as an example), but I found out the hard way that when it goes bad, it literally smells like farts. And I lean literally as in literally literally. Kept saying "what the hell smells like farts in my fridge?!" for like a week before I figured out that it had gone bad and was causing the smell.

It wouldn't be that big a leap that some might be more sensitive to it and smell it long before it goes bad

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

laurelraven ,

"Foolish mortals" is my go-to gender neutral form of address

laurelraven ,

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out if Panera workers aren't even making as much as McDonald's workers... I suspect they'll either pay it in spite of the exemption or be forever understaffed

laurelraven ,

Right?

I wonder how much they paid to keep from having to pay their workers a living wage... And then likely wind up having to anyway if they want to have enough staff to operate...

laurelraven ,

It's okay, it's mutual, the KIAs hate you right back

laurelraven ,

So much this

Also, what's three minutes for one person could be ten or twenty for someone else who can barely stand for five

There's a restaurant I like to go to that if you have certain disabilities, good luck getting there. The closest handicap parking spot is a block and a half away and there's only one, or a bit further there are a few in a parking garage. It's an uphill incline to get there and there's not a single bench the entire way between parking and the restaurant. If you're disabled but not to the point of being in a wheelchair, or don't have someone who can push that wheelchair uphill, and don't have a mobility scooter, you ain't getting there

And that's with our current car infrastructure, and just one example out of many of disabled hostile design in our car centric reality that people who've not had to navigate it from that perspective just don't understand. And they never bother asking someone who does experience it. So, I'm pretty tired of hearing the bullshit excuse of how it would be bad for disabled people if we went to walkable cities with public transit.

Stop using disabled people as your gotcha argument
