Disarm the poors! Only our oppressors should have the option of lethal self-defense!

kool_newt ,

Idk I need to get insurance for my car because it might hurt someone. I think this makes sense and is a good step. You have a right to own guns but no one said it would be cheap.

This brings up a whole other tangent that I'll ignore for now (the necessity of needing a car and it not being a right, and having to pay for it) -- but a dangerous item/toy etc and a gun, i.e. a fundamantal means of self defense, should be treated differently by law in a country that claims to be free.

kool_newt ,

Ideally, but shits crazy. I'm a transgender woman and like a third of this country proudly wants me dead and some of them are willing to make it happen.

kool_newt ,

Ya, I brandished my weapon and 100 million people said "whoa there partner!".

kool_newt ,

I love RadicalReviewer's cute little dog.

kool_newt ,

You're making Rudy look bad, he was sober for years! (prior to 1953 I hear).

Just throwing some thoughts out there

  • fdisk shows /dev/sdc1 and mount doesn't see it -- did you perhaps unplug it and replug it causing potential renumeration?

  • Use the dmesg command to watch Linux detect the device

  • Use cat /proc/partitions to see the kernels view of storage devices

  • Check out the /dev/disk/by-label, /dev/disk/by-uuid, /dev/disk/by-partlabel etc and see how the point to each other

e.g.

$ ls -l /dev/disk/by-partlabel/arch-root lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 25 19:46 /dev/disk/by-partlabel/arch-root -> ../../sda2

Arno Penzias: Nobel laureate who co-discovered 'echo of Big Bang' dies aged 90 ( physicsworld.com )

The cosmologist Arno Penzias, who discovered the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with Robert Wilson, died on 22 January at the age of 90. He shared a half of the 1978 Nobel Prize for Physics with Wilson, with the other half awarded to Pyotr Kapitsa for his work in low-temperature physics....

kool_newt ,

Aww man! I have a big picture of Penzias and Wilson and their antenna in my living room. I always loved their story.

uvc doesn't give you cancer, it can't penetrate deep enough, and the type of DNA damage it causes immediately kills the cell so it can't reproduce, cancer is cells that reproduce and don't die.

It's not that he hates people, it's that he's a psychopath and sadist, like most other cops.

kool_newt ,

Pretty sure I've seen this exact story about every 5 years for the last 20 years. It looks to me at this point like wealth apologism.

kool_newt ,

He's not bragging to us. The people he's bragging to are even stupider than he is, apparently it's working.

I'm pretty sure if you gave a basic cognitive function test to his audience, only about 35% would pass

kool_newt ,

Each election has a different expected low-turnout winner. In the race for U.S. President, low turnout nearly always benefits the Republicans. So one can expect forfeiting their vote to have the equivalent effect as voting for the low-turnout winner, i.e. Trump.

In a first-past-the-post voting system under duopoly control, voting third party is equivalent to forfeiting your vote.

kool_newt ,

I suppose, so long as you're ok with "making good on your threat" meaning living the remainder of your life in a fascist dictatorship. That's a little far for me to go to prove a point to people I've never met that probably won't even get my message.

Edited

Also, what good would teaching the Democrats a lesson do when Trump winning likely means an end to democracy.

kool_newt ,

At best it slows down a bit.

YES!!!! You get it! Now use that little bit of time if you're so inclined to try to prevent a slide into fascism in whatever way you do think might work.

kool_newt ,

That's up to each person. I'm personally working on forming a local mutual aid group.

Others can do what they can or are willing to. Others may not have hope that things could be truly made better, But to those people I'd say, don't you think it's worth it to expend just the little bit of effort it takes to vote? Is there nobody in your life that you'd spend an hour's worth of effort to potentially save their lives or at least put people in office that allow them to legally use the restroom?

Make no mistake, Republicans intentionally make life difficult for minorities , risky, scary, and

kool_newt ,

One perspective on this might be that Elon and friends have successfully identified a set of dubious advertisers and hate-tolerant userbase.

kool_newt ,

Well ya, that's the standard explanation, and probably the most likely to be right.

I like to wonder if there might be other explanations, or even multiple explanations. You've heard I'm sure of the quote like "never attribute to malice which can be adequately explained by stupidity"? I have my own version of that that goes something like this:

Never attribute an act to stupidity when a clear pattern of malice is apparent.

Where do I start with learning about the soil in my backyard?

Long story short - I moved from a country where there’s an abundance of black soil to a country with a dry climate and not much black soil. Not only that, I moved from an apartment to a house with plenty of land. I believe strongly that growing my own produce is the way to go, but sadly I lack a lot of skill....

kool_newt ,

You'll have to make or buy soil, the latter is very expensive, the former will take a couple years minimum and decent effort.

Start looking into composting and biochar. But don't fall into the trap thinking that you need special compost recipes, just put a variety of (non-toxic, biodegradable) materials in there. If you're able, make biochar.

kool_newt ,

Buying works, I bought stuff to build my soil for sure. My soil is desert silt, I made decent soil for my raised bed by mixing it with lots of compost as well as biochar, perlite, and vermiculite which I bought.

kool_newt ,

The first casualty of war is truth. We can trust Hamas as much or more than we can trust Israel. I'm not an expert, but I'd imagine we could find 100 instances of misinformation from Israel for every 1 from Hamas just from how much each group puts out.

kool_newt ,

no

kool_newt ,

This makes sense when it comes to voting restrictions. I'd say anyone seeking office in the U.S. should be able to speak fluent English (as that's the language their job will be conducted in) and be able to pass an aptitude test.

This test should be taken alone, in public view, and on camera, probably only after winning an election and failure means the runner up gets the position assuming they can pass the test.

kool_newt , (edited )

They're not random, they're likely carefully curated (by algorithm) to maximize profits and promote the interests of it's owner, who is that again?

kool_newt ,

You might be right, I'm skeptical as well that anything like this could actually be accomplished while minimizing corruption. There would be a different set of problems if done before the election.

kool_newt ,

True, but AWS and the cloud in general likely would've never evolved without top notch free software, i.e. Linux, because the cost would've been prohibitive. I am on a team that runs a small public cloud and there are many systems needed to support the cloud, it's not just the instances/VMs.

kool_newt ,

As I see it, the Kentucky GOP member(s) that supported this bill stated their intentions, the unhoused now have every valid reason to protect themselves against this mortal threat with appropriate force and it would be self-defense, and anyone who views the unhoused as part of their community does as well and it would be community defense.

Until appropriate negative consequences are a possibility from people standing up for themselves, the bad guys will keep winning.

kool_newt ,

This is a strategy question without a one-paragraph answer and a bit out of the scope of this post.

I've lived in close proximity to many unhoused people for years, not everyone that can't afford to join the ridiculous housing or rental markets is struggling to get food in their mouth. I've known many personally, they're not all starving maniacs like the stereotypes. Some have jobs and cell phones, many have belongings, things they've found, been given, or were gifted. Many are nice and happy to tell you their story in exchange for some respect.

In fact, my perhaps unorthodox opinion is that left should be uniting with this group rather than trying to convince well off liberals to resist vague threats of fascism.

kool_newt ,

I'm glad they exist, I just wish self-defense wasn't associated with right-wing idiots. ILiberals have been convinced that we're civilized now and have no need for self-defense at the personal or community level. The state will protect us right?

kool_newt ,

Edited

Very well. So I assume you as an armed liberal will be going to that town and making a stand.

Well, I won't be planning specific activities the authorities disagree with on Lemmy.

We solve society problems by society level solutions ...

How's that going for you?

Drone operators have homes and families and neighbors, some of whom could object to their behavior and take action to stop them from causing harm to others. If things ever got to this point in the U.S. the battlefield would not be neatly contained.

kool_newt ,

Pretty decent. Chances are you will never be a slave

This is only maybe true (things are changing fast, and mostly for the worse), and only if you define slavery in the worst way, i.e. chattel.

and never meet one which is the only time in human history this has been true.

I've met people who have spent time in prison, given little option but to labor for pennies a day. Not hard to find at all. Slavery isn't even forbidden in the U.S. Many others arguably fit the definition of wage slave. I myself feel compelled to sell my labor, what are my options?

Japanese interment camps. Your argument is defeated

Not sure exactly what you mean by this, but assuming you're providing a counter example, a single instance of something doesn't demonstrate that it is the only way a situation can play out.

kool_newt ,

I used no uncommon or unaccepted definitions of any word.

Btw I have redefined not agreeing with me as murder so unless you want to be a murderer…

I'm sure you identify as a helicopter also.

kool_newt ,

I'm not, it was an apparently bad joke in response to your joke implying I'm a murderer, after arbitrarily defining murder.

kool_newt , (edited )

Right!? How many ways can my midsection make me SAD.

Just wait until gut science is exploited for fun and profit like brain science is.

kool_newt ,

Solar is great, but decentralization is the way. Not this centralized, metered, power centralizing "green energy".

kool_newt ,

He should test out those new nitrogen chambers.

kool_newt ,

I think they might be pointing out that actual bad people don't care about protests. If the protests don't directly and obviously cause financial harm or risk to their position they will not be considered.

And I agree, we all need to stop thinking the bad people will start acting good "if just show them the error of their ways". These are dangerous people and we have a right as living beings to defend ourselves and our community from them - in every country.

Far-right extremism is thriving in rural areas. Here's what it looks like in Upstate NY ( www.northcountrypublicradio.org )

There’s a little wine shop in downtown Ballston Spa, New York with rainbow-colored bottles lining the shop’s front window. The village is small, about 5,000 people, and attracts tourists from all around the world....

kool_newt ,

This is going to get worse all over as most liberals move away and concentrate in specific places. They're making it easy for the Republicans to trap them in cities.

kool_newt ,

It's weird that self-defense has this time limit on it's validity. Like if someone tries to kill you and you kill them while they're in the action of stabbing you it's self-defense, but if a few minutes have passed it's murder.

If someone has made their intention to kill you clear, self-defense is a valid response, no time limit, no need to wait for triggers to be pulled. This is a group of people making their intentions clear walking down the street.

kool_newt , (edited )

I really don’t want to live in a world where feeling threatened grants a person all the powers of judge, jury, and executioner. Do you want lynch mobs?

We have this now but worse because it's organized against specific groups.

  • The state is nothing but an organized group of people who feel entitled to use lethal force to make you comply with their will.
  • Police are a huge organized hierarchical gang with a license to kill

We are simply propagandized to think this is the right way and every other way is wrong. Humans have been around for 2-300,000 years, 99% of that time with no state and it was sustainable. Now we have state and shit is being destroyed in a few generations. The state is the problem, not a few lynch mobs.

EDIT: I want to add, if you don't defend yourself from fascists, you end up in their world. This world of fascists will certainly grant effective judge, jury, and executioner status (i.e. they won't get in trouble) to any privileged person over any unprivileged person. Choose your future.

kool_newt ,

And we'll lose everything due to our unwillingness to sacrifice a bit.

kool_newt , (edited )

Edited - reworded

doesn’t make it right to murder people just because you felt threatened by them

Totally depends on the threat. If the threat is real and mortal, I'd say it sure does give one the right to defend themselves in a way that eliminates the threat. On the other hand, a vague feeling of being threatened does not give one the right to harm others. If it's not your life or something critical to your life being threatened a lesser response is probably more appropriate. I'm not saying shoot someone for stealing your Amazon package. Like every other situation, there is nuance.

Also, your quotation is not from me.

kool_newt ,

Sure

State - An organized group of people who claim exclusive acceptable use of violence within a claimed geographic region and use violence to ensure this monopoly continues.

Within a state most self-defense or community-defense is denigrated as "vigilante justice".

A government typically is also a state but it's not necessary for a polity that is focused on say community coordination to claim exclusive legality to the use of violence.

kool_newt ,

I hope you're right, actually I hope we never have to learn if you're right.

kool_newt ,

So similarly, a country that supplied arms to NAZI Germany bore no responsibility? I'd say I disagree.
