So, something I heard recently on my local NPR station on borrowing ebooks vs. hardcover from your local library:
Apparently, the library pays ~$15 for a hardcover book, but ~$150 for the ebook - and the ebook is a LIMITED LICENSE for, say, 52 loans of that book. After which they have to pay ANOTHER $150 for the book, AGAIN.

The takeaway here: If you can get the hardcopy from the library instead of borrowing an ebook, please do so. The impact on their budget will be SIGNIFICANT.

Here's a related, but older, reference:

@n1xnx Hi - as a librarian, I want everyone to read books in whatever format they prefer! But it's true that these terms are ridiculous. What we really need is legislation calling for fair e-book pricing and publishing practices.

This is a good campaign website:

This NPR story about the Biden admin nursing home staffing requirements devotes TEN PARAGRAPHS featuring CEO Stu Almer of the non-profit Gerwin Healthcare System complaining it's too hard and expensive to hire enough staff.
Maybe the reporter could have found out

I read "The Parable of the Sofa" bc @pluralistic recommended it and the pun made me smile

And now I feel like a Civic Hero bc I dropped off the old couch cushion at my excellent local upholstery shop 💪

Here's the essay: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2024/06/01/Parable-of-the-Sofa

And for people in , the shop is Ecujimo in Brookline Village

Wow. A microbiology lab at Texas A&M accepted purchased raw milk samples from NPR for H5N1 testing, then contacted the milk producers to seek permission. When the producers said, "don't test our milk," the lab not only declined to carry out the tests but also refused to send the samples on to another lab.

News: Biobot is sunsetting its COVID-19 wastewater public data visualization platform.

While Biobot will continue to publish their contextualized weekly respiratory risk reports, this represents another decrease in data transparency, and a step in the wrong direction.

    @luckytran
They call them weekly reports, but they also say
“These reports will be published throughout the respiratory virus season and during moments of need (such as in the case of H5N1)…. Periodic updates will also be shared outside of respiratory virus season as and when they become relevant to the public.”

Just got a peer review request from a journal I didn't know, and because the topic was right up my alley I went and looked up the journal -- diamond OA, CC-BY, author retains copyright -- all things I want to support. None of which they mentioned in the request.

I know @pluralistic has talked about right to repair in the context of wheelchairs - I bet you'd be interested in this too

    https://www.statnews.com/2024/05/01/wheelchair-repair-delay-numotion-national-seating-mobility/

The headline is "After private equity firms gobbled up wheelchair makers, users pay the price in long repair times"

"We are actively committed to becoming a fully Open Access journal."

"Non-primary research is not eligible for Open Access and is only published using the traditional publishing route."

Someone is using the words "actively," "committed," and "fully" in very creative ways

    LMAO at this

** Please note that some fully open access journals require the submitting author to tick a box agreeing to the standard publishing agreement as part of the submission process. In such instances, authors should tick this box to be able to proceed and the values will then be manually overridden by our Author Service team.

Accept the terms that you legally can't accept, and then we promise we'll override the system to apply the right terms later. Trust me :)

Hmmm. It’s like GenZ has spent their formative years living through a historic pandemic that is causing mass death and disability.

When an author uses a transformative agreement to publish without themselves paying an APC, is it appropriate to say "The authors received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article"?
If not, what should they say in the funding/sponsorship section?
