Is the renewable energy replacing the polluting fossil fuel energy or just being added on top of it? Or asked another way, is the amount of greenhouse gas being produced dropping or just not increasing as fast?

I don't know where to find that kind of information.

Well… as someone who grew up in the 80s, I can confirm: this describes most of the last 40 years.
