Mask Bans?

I can't even process this one. It's hard to get people to wear masks. Why

I just CAN NOT.

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@futurebird to add insult to injury, the supporters of this are mostly also against gun bans.

These are the people that want to see the world burn. If you believe those are real, then it all starts to make sense.

All the reporting on the final arguments in the election interference case were very muddled and frankly hard to follow for what I wanted to know.

Basically I'm mostly curious if the defense mostly made a technical argument about the law, or did the defense try to dispute the facts of the case?

Can anyone who has had some time to follow this say?

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@futurebird Afaict they mostly dispute the facts.

I don't really like the style, but I think this could an OK summary of the arguments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_cRfrlyNAc I'm very confused by the saga, so I could be way off. Happy to learn if there are better summaries.

If you are a cis person and you have "trans rights are human rights" in your bio I am generally going to assume that you are not a safe person.

Similarly. If you put "Ally" in your bio I am going to assume you aren't one.

Not because it is bad to flag that "Trans rights are human rights," but because it is too easy: you are really only advertising who you are to followers and potential followers, and that is a very easy thing to do without having done the work.

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@hrefna well worded, good point. I think I get it.

Now it would be lovely to also add constructive advice for those that want to follow your guidance.

My try/suggestion: take action, instead of advertising oneself as a good person. First the action is more likely to affect the world. Second, the action is more honest and believable.

Needs better wording I guess, but something along these lines would be helpful, no?

It might be time for me to go on a news diet again. There are too many events that are beyond my control and influence and it's not effective to let such things be primary sources of worry.

Worrying about things you can't change.

Nothing I hear about the Supreme Court is calming or confidence inspiring. None of the news about the wars ... Where are the people in these events guided by something bigger than self interest, petty politics, where are the idealists?

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@futurebird news diets are healthy, thanks for the reminder! Complete abstinence however is not, I think. Even if things are going apeshit, it's better to know, especially when it's about time to side step some flying excrement.

And maybe, just maybe, once in a while, you'll have the opportunity to help some unfortunate creature that deserved better. That in itself is a source of great joy for me.

And when in doubt, I listen to Bobby McFerrin.

Remember: Most billionaires are not “self-made.” They’re made via a combination of inherited wealth, government subsidies, tax loopholes, labor exploitation, and policy failures. Can we stop perpetuating a myth that blames wealth inequality on the choices of everyday Americans?

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@rbreich luck and privilege come also in other forms than inheritance. But bottom line becoming a millionaire is possibly causal, but being a billionaire is always a statistical fluke. Nobody has a right to be that wealthy, no matter who they are and what they did.

I noticed another article scolding “doomers” for doing it wrong. It says we shouldn’t make people sad or angry about what capitalist industry is doing to our climate and environment. The article claims a better approach is to give people hope, and emphasize positive steps they can take like planting a tree or riding a bike.

Well, sure, those things are good, and I encourage them. But even if everyone who reads this post or sees that article stops driving a car in favor of bike riding and also cheerfully begins planting trees, that still will not make any significant difference in altering the trajectory of climate breakdown.

The problem we face is much bigger than your carbon footprint or mine. And whether you feel happy or sad after reading this, that certainly will not affect the motivation of the oligarchs who own our society. Their only concern is to make more money and gain more power.

Of course you and I should take appropriate individual actions (drive less, fly less, buy less, etc.), but we also should recognize that while those actions are important, they are not sufficient. Because what we need is system change.

That will not be easy, but it’s essential.

To get a comprehensive level of system change — which is the only kind that offers any true hope of avoiding complete disaster — we must remove all those currently in power, including the billionaires who control the politicians, and replace the current system with a different one.

We must end capitalism and commence degrowth.

Yes, this is a big ask. But we're talking about life or death here, literally. So it's a bold choice we must make.

@breadandcircuses neither doomers, nor optimists get anything done. "Be pessimistic in your thoughts, but optimistic in your actions" I heard recently. It resonates with me.

The number of workplace strikes in America hit a 23-year high last year.

The number of workers on strike jumped nearly 300% from 2022.

It’s a historic moment for the labor movement.

Workers are done letting billionaires and corporations hoard all the wealth and power.

iwein ,
@iwein@mas.to avatar

@rbreich quality of labor laws is a good way to prevent a billionaire problem in your country

Got called a fascist by a Biden supporter for..... saying I support Biden?

Lesson of the day: Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath, put your phone down, and remind yourself that you simply cannot win on social media.

    The biggest challenge in 2024 is to get enough people to actually listen to what Trump and those around him are openly, consistently, and explicitly promising to do once they get back to power.

    It is utterly deranged, and discounting it as just rhetoric would be a disaster.

    iwein ,
    @iwein@mas.to avatar

    @tzimmer_history we know by now the percentage of stupid, and the outside evil influence in the USA are ample to make this the gravest risk of pulling total societal collapse forward in time.

    We're all really scared, so can us peeps please educate yourself and put your democracy in order?
