Android Microphone Snooping ( lemmy.world )

So I had a verbal conversation with a coworker yesterday and now I'm getting fed very specific ads. No possible way it's accidental. I have most of the microphone access to apps limited, I have Google assistant turned off and no VPA setup in my home. I use a Oneplus 9 pro, does anyone have recommendations on how to further root...

Reddit is licensing its content to Google to help train its AI models ( www.engadget.com )

Google has struck a deal with Reddit that will allow the search engine maker to train its AI models on Reddit’s vast catalog of user-generated content, the two companies announced. Under the arrangement, Google will get access to Reddit’s Data API, which will help the company “better understand” content from the site....

I had to replace my bowl because my kids used metal spoons on it so much the coating was coming off. Annoying but great that I could buy a part for a 12 yo machine.

My single annoyance is the non replaceable battery. It lasted a decade, but I had to desolder it from the board to replace it. I ended up replacing the battery with a battery holder I got off ebay, so in several years when I have to replace it again I won't have to solder anything.

Dell Optiplex... You can buy them used all over still. Find one with a decent processor and upgrade everything else. The fans are easy to find and replace. I've got a Linux based MCPC that's about a decade old that's still going strong. I've got one for my kids with Linux on it. I've bought several for elderly relatives and upgraded the ram and drive to ssd. They really just seem to go forever.

CCP lies about everything constantly, runs all businesses, and controls the media. This is extremely well documented.

I hear you on the memory foam but hear me out. I want something firm but still very comfortable that won't hurt from hardness in the morning. I like some support but not a ton and I hate sinking into a mattress like foam.

My old mattress crapped out about 5 years ago. I bought and returned several mattresses until I settled on the following. I have a fairly cheap firm mattress from a local store. Firm are normally cheaper by the way. I think it was 650 for a king. Then I bought a really nice 3" closed cell foam topper for $200. I expected it to only last a few years, but it's still great. At least another couple years left. But the mattress is still like new because there's zero cushion on it.

Every mattress will wear. But it's primarily the cushion and weak springs that wear. So BFL is not reasonable but you can extend the life in certain circumstances. Since firm mattresses have hard springs and no cushion, they'll last a lot longer. The topper is essentially the only real wear item. Since they come in different materials and thicknesses, you can dial in your preference easily.

Cops Used DNA to Predict a Suspect’s Face—and Tried to Run Facial Recognition on It ( www.wired.com )

For facial recognition experts and privacy advocates, the East Bay detective’s request, while dystopian, was also entirely predictable. It emphasizes the ways that, without oversight, law enforcement is able to mix and match technologies in unintended ways, using untested algorithms to single out suspects based on unknowable...

Snapchat gave the info to police. From BBC:

On its website, in a section titled "How We Work with Law Enforcement Authorities", Snapchat says one of its goals is to "maintain a safe and fun environment where Snapchatters are free to express themselves and stay in touch with their real friends".

It adds: "We also work to proactively escalate to law enforcement any content appearing to involve imminent threats to life, such as school shooting threats, bomb threats and missing persons cases, and respond to law enforcement's emergency requests for disclosure of data when law enforcement is handling a case involving an imminent threat to life.

Why did you black out your private IP addresses?

As soon as the purchase was made public the fortune 50 company I work for ran as fast as possible to VARs looking for alternatives. It will take us 5 years to migrate off, but I've never seen such a universal desire to jump to another product inside a company this large. Broadcom is universally known to do nothing but milk and kill what they aquire.

I have pihole and premium. I get a lot of buffer stalls too. Started recently. But they're also updating the Android app every couple weeks, so I assumed they are screwing things all up out of incompetence.

This must be some exec's hard focus right now. What a tool.

grayman ,

I have premium and am logged in. I get the stalls. It's also a new experience. I also have to manually adjust quality to get better than squareville.

Premium user here. Sorry I'm outside of your bubble. Unfortunately, there still is good reason to have it right now. At least for those in my circle.

The stock market should not exist. Investing in companies is fine, but we shouldn't be able to buy our sell investment shares like a commodity.

All subsidies should not exist. They only alter the supply/demand in unnecessary and damaging ways. This must come with ending commodities trading like stock market investing.

The Henson Safety Razor, a nearly 1-to-1 replacement for disposable razors, with all the environmental benefits of a regular safety razor, and certifiably BIFL ( slrpnk.net )

When I became more environmentally conscious many years ago, I decided to switch to a safety razor to reduce plastic waste. I landed on a reputable safety razor with a 'mild' angle, something that would be good for sensitive skin. Even with a good shaving soap, I found that I would regularly still get some discomfort from razor...

I don't understand how you guys can use blades for so long. That's 1 blade per month. I tried about 20 brands. Feather was the best for me. I get 2 or 3 shaves. That's it. All other brands i got 1 shave. I blew through 50 blades (bought in May) in the last 6 months. By the 3rd shave I'm getting nicks from dull spots.

The specific rule you point out is stupid but easy to hack. Your score didn't go down because they lost the interest you'd have paid. When you pay off a secured debt, the loaned amount is deducted from your total credit potential, which increases your utilized credit percentage. The hack is to open a line of credit against the secured asset before it's paid off or another line of unsecured credit. Your credit utilization will drop, thus increasing your score.

My score is over 800 and has been for over a decade. I have like 12 credit cards but only use 2 and pay them off every month... Costco for the store and gas and a high cash back card for everything else. The others I keep open with 1 small purchase each year. Every store wants you to have one, so they're easy to get. I have added and paid off multiple small to medium (10-60k) secured loans over the years and my score only fluctuates a little for a few weeks then goes back because my total credit with the dozen credit cards is so large.

I imagine he's very frustrated with the medical process.... All those machines running old proprietary windows and old proprietary vendor software.

Not tongue in cheek at all either. It scares me and I'm nowhere near as hard core as RMS.
