more like chinese cars were manufactured with child labor with well below average work conditions

MagneticFusion ,

Let me suggest Magic Earth.

Has live traffic updates, uses OSM database, amazing UI with tons of features, can work offline by downloading maps, and very privacy respecting (feel free to look through their privacy policy it is very short and simple). Only downside is it is not FOSS, but I tried using Organic Maps and then OsmAND for almost the past year and gave up because they just are too much of a downgrade from Google Maps both in terms of UI and traffic updates, whereas Magic Earth feels like the perfect compromise.

People always say don't use a VPN because you have to completely trust the VPN provider. Firstly, there are various trustworthy and reputable VPN providers. Secondly, if you do end up using a shady VPN, you are really just back at square one because it's not like your ISP isn't siphoning all of your data anyways.
Edit: typos

MagneticFusion ,

If Mullvad got raided by the Swedish police and was not able to provide them with a single bit of data, then I think it is very safe to assume they are not providing the data to ANYONE

MagneticFusion ,

Again, worst case scenario and you are just back to square one. If you are trying to do illegal activities or hide from the feds in general, no amount of VPN (even self hosted) would prevent that. You would need to start using TOR and breaking into a whole different level of OPSEC than the average Joe trying to get some more privacy in his day to day life

MagneticFusion OP ,

not sure why you are being downvoted but nah it's Los Angeles

MagneticFusion ,

If he is using Windows in a VM, he probably already runs Linux as his base OS and is using the VM for a windows only app

MagneticFusion OP ,

If only it was just them and not every car manufacturer

I watched this video as well and I wanna say I 1000% disagree with "liking the ads and targeted search results" or when he said memorizing passwords (thats why password managers are a thing). Because this is just sucking into the consumerism defeatist mentality of giving away your rights and power for a little bit of extra convenience because as we have more and more technology we become lazier and lazier as humans.

I do however agree with the points he brought up about data breaches and obviously the worst offender of all, government mass surveillance and censorship, but I feel like he didn't dig as deep into those topics granted he isn't Mental Outlaw or Naomi Brockwell. And excluding data breaches and government surveillance, there are still issues with lets say freely giving your location data to everyone such as selling your location when you were at an abortion clinic while u live in a state where abortion is now illegal. The government does not have to surveil you anymore when the corporations do it and the government just buys the data off of them.

I'm so tired of the misinformation about Monero being traced to catch Finnish hacker. The hacker just had one of the worst opsecs imagineable and .tar'ed his entire home directory when trying to upload the information on the dark web, and ended up as a result, uploading his entire home directory. Once you do that it becomes pretty easy to identify who the fuck you are and track you down. Here is a video by mental outlaw going more in depth.https://youtu.be/7CD_Nl3iwhE&t=0

I am not a crypto bro myself and personally don't see volatile cryptocurrency as a solution but I'm tired of hearing "Monero traced back to its user" NO. Monero USER was found because of OTHER bad opsec practices.

custom domains are a savior. provider shuts down? thats fine, switch to another provider. just a pain to forward all ur emails to the new provider.

i moved my stuff from skiff to proton mail plus

MagneticFusion ,

Just go with Proton. They are the best and the most likely to not sell out/stay relevant in the business

MagneticFusion ,

Sad. I switched from Tuta kinda recently because Tuta's UI was just bad and no PGP support. Looks like I'm going to start using the paid Proton plan.

MagneticFusion ,

I tried to think very hard for OpenSuse TW but there honestly is nothing, other than maybe not shipping duplicate apps (e.g. two camera apps) with the ISO.

For me I just had to disable the firewall, connect to the printer and print a blank page, and then reenable the firewall and it seemed to work since then. HP printer

I donated to them last year. Sad to hear they did not reach their target

It is amazing for a foss video editor. And I believe the only foss video editor

What is a distro with updates of Arch but dependencies of Fedora?

I am currently using EndeavourOS, but am annoyed by the constant daily updates of 1GB and pacman not installing important dependencies automatically (ex: spell checker for document editor). I like the way Fedora works: you update whenever, important dependencies are downloaded automatically, and packages are recent-ish, but I...

MagneticFusion ,

I second this. Tumbleweed has been an amazing experience.

MagneticFusion ,

I have pretty much everything in Flatpaks besides system apps. From browser to media players to games to libreoffice, etc

MagneticFusion ,

I have done that so yes

MagneticFusion ,

i like how while all of this is happening, the governments do absolutely nothing to stop it. But as soon as encryption or anything that prevents them from spying comes into the play, they try their hardest to outlaw it to "protect the children"

MagneticFusion ,

My guess is he just hasn't used it long enough to know how good it is

What is Firefox's Use Case for Normies/Tech Illiterate People?

Currently a university student, and somewhat frequently, I see Firefox installed on people's laptops but they also have Chrome installed and are using Chrome, or Edge, or Safari. Rarely do I see Firefox actually being used but I see it installed frequently. Does anyone have a clue as to why they have it installed?...

MagneticFusion ,

I plan on doing the same eventually once I get a new car

MagneticFusion ,

Your best bet would be a custom DNS blocklist that you can get on AdGuard or NextDNS

I have an issue with how SIM cards are handled in most countries

Almost all countries require official authentication to activate a SIM card. This seems to me as a huge privacy problem, if the country can track sim cards across cell towers and connect them to a person. It seems like a dystopian system, that we litterely can not hide from our governments without turning off our smartphones....

MagneticFusion ,

once again apple marketing making it SEEM like they care about your privacy

MagneticFusion ,

I believe no. I'm running Firefox with arkenfox user.js and when I take this test https://www.bromite.org/detect it shows a new and different fingerprint if everytime i close and reopen the browser. Feel free to try it for yourself.

And while Brave may be private from outsiders, it is far from private from Brave Software themselves and I wouldn't trust them if I was honest with you. If you want an alternative chromium based browser, check out Vivaldi. They don't have aaaas many privacy features built in as Brave does but you can still get very private and obviously tack on Ublock origin and a customized DNS block list like you normally would with any other browser. And they are significantly more trustworthy than Brave

MagneticFusion OP ,

I have never used teams so I am thinking that the others may see your email and if they see if it is something random they could be turned off during the interview?
