I'm Sarah. I'm a Brit who fled to Portugal on account of Brexit, increasing intolerance and the British weather. I like climbing (although I can't do much any more for health reasons) and sailing. This is a Friendica account. Friendica is kinda like Facebook as Mastodon is kinda like Twitter, except they can talk to each other.

Got my ballot paper.

As a result of “Sir Knight Commander of the British Empire” Kier Starmer’s performative cruelty against trans women within the last day, I have voted Green.

@gAlienLifeform this is what much of the EU public is voting for, cheered on by the media which finds the extreme right irresistibly sexy.

They are voting for murdering desperate people.

And they’re going to keep doing it, because it’s easy to push the narrative that these people aren’t human beings with hopes and fears and desires, but some amorphous threat that “must be stopped”.

We can be better than this, but we never see to chose to be.

A thing I have noticed. 2 decades ago, there was decent pharmaceutical knowledge in the trans community. We knew what GnRH agonists were and how they work. We knew that for trans girls, if you couldn’t get them, then a cocktail of spironolactone and finasteride would do a pretty good job as a replacement. We knew that cyproterone acetate worked even better than spiro, but was hepatotoxic, so be careful.

I feel like that’s all been … lost?

I suspect that until this sentence, most currently transitioning people won’t even know that GnRH agonist is the proper term for what is frequently and misleadingly called a “puberty blocker”.

How did we let all this knowledge get lost? We, as a community, used to know how to outflank attempts to stop us accessing medication.

Now the British government just go, “we’re banning prescription of puberty blockers” and everyone throws their hands up and goes, “oh well, no alternative but unopposed testosterone I guess”.

We were better than this. Why did that go away?

@uriel238 @cyu Realistically, I can't see it being cheaper than implants, and will probably need lots of orthodontic treatment when the new tooth comes through.

I have an implant, with bone regeneration, and honestly, it's just a tooth. Even with the bone regeneration, my total time in the chair was probably less than 90 minutes.

And, bonus, I can't get toothache in it, and if it breaks, it's 2 weeks to replace it like nothing happened.

The only way I see this competing with implants if it's cheaper (honestly can't see that happening) or less hassle (again, seems unlikely).

Implants are that good, and they're gonna be hard to displace as the "gold standard" to replace missing teeth.

The linked document is being circulated amongst NHS service providers for young trans people. It advises cessation of ALL medical intervention for transition but goes further. It suggests that if the patient or parents continue to access trans healthcare outside their system, they should be reported to social services with the implicit threat that the children will be taken from their parents.

IF YOU ARE A YOUNG TRANS PERSON OR A PARENT OF ONE, IT IS LIKELY UNSAFE TO ENGAGE WITH NHS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

I think I’ve put my finger on what coming back to the UK feels like. If an actual nation state could be suffering from clinical depression, this is what it would look like: Everything is slowly going to shit; the country seems to see no future for itself; it’s making decision after decision that is self neglect bordering on self harm; quite possibly the most unpopular government to be removed by democratic vote rather than bloodshed is about to lose an election by a cataclysmic margin, and when the opposition, who are set to clean up, are asked what they’re going to do differently, the answer is a shrug followed by, “nothing”.

And people here more or less accept it, because boiling frogs and suchlike, but then you go elsewhere (no, America, not you, sit back down), and it’s like the colour returns to the world and you didn’t even realise it was missing.

Dear UK residents. I’m sorry to be tedious, but I’m going to do the trans Cassandra thing again.

The government is now moving towards regarding trans people as effective children until the age of 25.

This will be established as precedent and then used to screw over any and all young adults who can’t escape from abusive parents, especially young women.

If you want to do anything about this, you need to fight for trans people. Yes, you. Now.

We all know that isn’t going to happen to any significant extent though.

As you were.

Trans women, 6 months on HRT: “My breasts must have stopped growing now and I’m only an AA cup! WOE!”

Trans women 18 years after transition (e.g. me, now): “Aw fuck, I gained a cup size last week.”

I see GamerGate is in the news because it’s coming up to the tenth anniversary. Ten years ago, I was in the middle of a nervous breakdown caused by transphobic harassment from TERfs organised on social media. They were using the same tactics that, months later, would be the hallmark of GamerGate.

And yet the surviving narrative is that this sort of organised, “culture war” harassment originated with GG.

It didn’t. They did it to trans women, and probably others, first, and we raised the alarm, and nobody thought it mattered enough to do anything.

And then they came for the rest of you.

They keep doing this. We keep raising the alarm. We keep being ignored.

Maybe one day people will learn.

Do cis people in the UK actually think there has ever been a point at which transgender medicine was widely and routinely available on the NHS?

Guys, it never has. When they exist at all, the services are chronically underfunded with waiting lists that literally stretch for decades.

To a first approximation, if you want to medically transition in the UK, you are on your own, unless you want to fight a war of attrition for years.

TERFs like to pretend that you can easily access NHS gender identity services as if it were just a thing people do.

It appears some people have believed their fairy tales. However badly you think trans people are treated by the medical establishment in the UK, I promise you that the reality is worse, and always has been.

“Children on puberty blockers”. Fucking state of it. There are no children on puberty blockers. Not because they’re trans, anyway.

@LWD @L4s Ha ha ha. No.

It means people get to starve in poverty because society has simultaneously decided that if you are t already rich then you must work as a moral imperative, but there is no work, and so while starving in poverty is unavoidable, you deserve it anyway.

Because we live in a fucking dystopia.

@los_chill @LWD there isn’t one. The oligarchs and billionaires want feudalism.
