As A.R. Moxon, who grew up the son of white evangelical Christian missionaries, says, it takes "very fine people" to sustain people like Nazis, Confederates, Christian nationalists, and authoritarian supremacists. And this is a primary point of his forthcoming book Very Fine People, taking off on Trump's staterment after the neo-Nazi demonstration in Charlottesville that there were "very fine people" on both sides.

We both speculated that widespread use of snoop-phones and antisocial media platforms, which were addictive to social groups, helped to bring that change about. A decrease in Americans' use of those systems might perhaps expand the space for civil society.

It is not much like patents, but it does create a private monopoly over selling seeds or plants. PRRI recently issued a report showing that, from 2002-3, support for LGBTQ rights declined nationally. Melissa Deckman of PRRI explains to William Brangham why this is happening:

"I think what's happening is that you see many Republican leaders in red states, really trying to amp up the volume, so to speak on LGBTQ rights, and really trying to claw back some of those rights across the country."

Things people say, nod and agree with, but did we really think about that?

"Short form video content is bad it makes for short attention spans."

Been hearing this a lot with reference to tiktok. But, it's been around since I was a kid. (MTV is bad, see MaxHeadroom satirizing this through blipverts)

OK, the way that tiktok can induce slack-jawed zoned out infi-scrolling seems "bad" because that seems like manipulation.

But short form content? Is it really bad?

fluffykittycat ,
@fluffykittycat@furry.engineer avatar

@futurebird no, I do think strict character limits are bad. You feel forced to strip nuance or reply to yourself 10 times where you can be quoted out of context

fluffykittycat ,
@fluffykittycat@furry.engineer avatar

@futurebird I bet the dirty secret of the ad economy Is unattended viewing. You can rack up hours of watch time easy by not being there.
