Watched two really really lovely episodes of Grand Designs NZ today. Both were just really genuine couples working hands on to build something they really believed in.

Am jealous and impressed in equal measure. Sometimes I watch these shows and feel like I've wasted my life!

Another amazing lady and her hubby was a gem. The finish inside this home was unimaginable.
This home is a rare moment in time, and such a treasure that a little of their journey has been captured by the production team.

Grand Designs NZ:
Lovely family of wood-turners and beet farmers hand craft a small cottage in the woods where they can live off-grid with a sustainable garden patch.

Grand Design AU:
Lady with more botox than cellulite spends $3m on a new pool in their Sydney backyard but is thwarted by neighbours who complain when their lounge-room is crushed by a landslip.

Thinking about all those TV commercials in the 70s that were basically "50,000 people can't be wrong!" and how today we know that 50 million people can be totally off the deep-end wrong and that's just "normal" now.

Watching an in-depth documentary series about the cold war, starting from WWII and the creation of nuclear weapons.

It's slow paced, very detailed and utterly thorough. We're just getting into the 70s and 80s. I'm reminded now, that I had totally forgotten how dire life behind the iron curtain used to be back then. And how random the logic of "global leaders" can be. Nobody knows what they're doing. Nobody.

Not seen that one.

I'm quite surprised at the quality and depth of this doco. It's a more traditional format that really takes time to work through the story, not rushing it. Not trying to jam everything into a 30 minute slot.

They pause on the lives of very specific people and we get to know them a little. It's very personal for such a historical account.

Slowly working my way through a few terabytes of timelapses shot in Feb and March.

Just after dinner we saw auroras poking through gaps in the cloud. I setup my first camera outside the rental cabin, pointed across the fjord to capture the clouds rolling by.

For the next hour I was helping my FIL shoot the more active auroras in the east. And didn't realise that my cloud timelapse was turning into an aurora timelapse :) Huge win.

Clouds giving way to aurora over the course of an hour.

A quick favour to ask all the nice folks who follow me.

You probably follow some other nice photographers and writers, so I'd love it for everyone to tag some of their favie people in a reply to this toot.

Cannot see how I'm gonna manage this whole "getting old gracefully" thing.

My brain is built for anxiety and rage instead, and the people in charge on this planet are only making it worse.

Took a little walk today. Some nice afternoon light in Senja, plus a minimum of shrubs. Just enough snow to make things pretty.

Hoping for clear skies tonight. Can still see some stars out there, but not much aurora activity. Not yet anyway!

I avoid IQ tests of any sort.

Last thing I wanna confirm is that my brain really is smart, and hence lose one of the major excuses for why I haven't achieved more with my life.

Got a little warm up at twilight, with a hint of aurora popping into the north sky. Forecast for proper action around midnight tonight. Fingers crossed for the nest few hours, and then the next days!

We're ready and waiting :)

Haaaaaa just saw the stackplot bounce and yes, there's a patch of vibrant green streaking across the northern sky again. Some very excited travellers out on the decks tonight.

One hour of Tromsø nordlys from this evening, reduced to 23 seconds.

One of the reasons I love Tromsø is because even a little "level 2" aurora event is worth staying up late for :)

That and very cool cabins on the edge of a fjord with views of the night sky. Love it up here.

Got a few breaks in the cloud last night, and a few dances from the nordlys as well. Not looking as lucky this evening though. She's a fickle lady Miss Aurora.

Please please please don't follow and boost content from random accounts that steal photos from all over the internet in order to build themselves an audience.

It's not nice for the artists who created those photos in the first place, having their work stolen. But you are being manipulated by someone who doesn't even put their real name or face to the account.

And in 6 months time that account will be spamming you with misinformation about Russia or something, instead of stolen art.

Speaking as a higher earner:

Bullshit.

If you’re a higher earner and you can’t afford essentials: Sell one of your Audis. Shut the fuck up, you’re an embarrassment.

I keep hearing about how people earning four times my income are doing it just as tough as everyone else and I don't think reality has a role in Australian media anymore.

Love it don't fight it :)

This video looks at how to shape light in the studio versus how light shapes us on our journeys. We’re delving into light and the difference between photographers who love to control it versus those who are guided by it.

Melbourne this morning. Cabbage Butterflies in the sage bushes.

The bokeh on the 100mm F2.8 macro is a bit lush.

Small sensor but not especially small camera! Years ago I had their GX85 and that was a peach. They've not replaced that model, which is a shame because it's kinda the camera I really want :)

Small is good!

"YayMe.txt"

Years ago I learned about this idea of keeping a text file on your desktop where you write a little note to yourself each time you do something good. Or in my case I screenshot the nice comments on a blog post or video.

It's a way of being grateful, but also a way to reduce the volume of that inner voice that keeps being a downer.

Not everyone is naturally positive about the world or themselves. Little things like YayMe.txt can be profoundly beneficial.

In the mid 90s a very nice chap hired me for a job in a research lab.

Every day I'd go into work and he'd have a bunch of new ideas to study and I'd say something like, "But I've never done that before, in fact nobody has."

And he'd say, "That's OK, today we'll work out a way to do it."

And that's been my life ever since. Every day working out how to do stuff that I don't understand. What a marvellous chap to work for. He literally changed my life.
