So incredibly patronizing. Imagine believing that a year and a half of disruption could make everyone not have interpersonal skills.

It’s not the pandemic, Fortune. If they’re accurately conveying contempt, I figure their interpersonal skills are just fine.

One day OpenAI will acknowledge that its entire business is built on misappropriation of intellectual property. Today is not that day.

Part of OpenAI's schtick is blurring the line: They handwave past copyright concerns over their training data, mounting a plausible but contestable claim of fair use. But then they pull shit like this.

Slack is now using all content, including DMs, to train LLMs.

They offer a thing they're calling an "opt-out."

The opt-out (a) is only available to companies who are slack customers, not end users, and (b) doesn't actually opt-out.

When a company account holder tries to opt-out, Slack says their data will still be used to train LLMs, but the results won't be shared with other companies.

LOL no. That's not an opt-out. The way to opt-out is to stop using Slack.

“Quiet quitting” isn’t a real thing, it’s the product of an emotional disorder experienced by managers, where they have a vague unexplainable suspicion that their team members are terrible even when they’re producing superb work. Any company concerned about quiet quitting in their workforce can completely eliminate the phenomenon by clearing out their middle management ranks. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/work/2024/04/25/quiet-quitters-test-employers-even-more-than-staff-departures/

Shout out to the air traffic controller who did his best to help out the Jabiru pilot whose engine failed at 9500 near Dubbo this afternoon.

Airplane ended up landing safely in a paddock (I’m sure all of us on the area freq exhaled a simultaneous sigh of relief when we heard the pilot check in from the ground)

The controller knew enough about GA to be able to tutor the pilot through the iPad taps he’d need to use the ruler to measure his distance from Dubbo. Not something I expected to hear.

Anyway: Good outcome, three cheers for everyone involved.

Once again, someone in Australia's ATC organization didn't show up for work, and their roster is so stretched that the affected console will be unattended for the shift, so a block of airspace between Ballina and the Sydney Northern Beaches is under TIBA procedures.

TIBA means ATC doesn't tell any airliners about traffic conflicts, and all controlled airspace reverts to uncontrolled. "Don't bother calling us, nobody's listening."

TIBA is usually what you expect overflying war zones where there's no ATC capability. It's not what you expect from a technically advanced first-world country with a stable government.

Flights will be cancelled due to this: Airlines will risk-assess and decide that mid-air collision risk from spending an hour following GPS airways in uncontrolled airspace in one of the world's busiest air corridors is too high, and they'll stay on the ground.

Australia's semi-privatized ATC system is a failed experiment. Air Services is a broken organization that's incapable of doing its job. It needs to be nationalized. #avgeek

@vampiress @stilgherrian The other fun thing about it is that it's marketed as the kind of thing where you can land it on a lake, throw out the anchor, fling the doors open, kick back, and spend the afternoon fishing before you fly home again.

Which neglects the fact that one of the only things that makes fishing on a lake fun is beer. Which you can't drink if you're flying. :-)

@vampiress So it'll be like a lecture with an interactive element?

Maybe start with a brief-ish monologue about the philosophy behind the tool to get attendees into the right head-space, then introduce some representative example case studies, then walk through implementing them.

@vampiress If it’s any consolation, the original Commodore joystick was the same as an Atari joystick, just injection moulded in a different color.

The pinouts on the DB-9 were the same.

There weren’t many joystick OEMs at the time.

If you pull it apart you’ll see a board with switches made out of steel wafers pressed into a dome shape which completes a circuit when flattened. The wafers eventually crack. These joysticks are definitely life-limited.
