Yanis Varoufakis: establishing a state of Palestine should not aim for symmetrical two-way apartheid; the proper goal is to bring the two groups closer together. Let's not lose sight of where we want to end up.

duncan_bayne ,
@duncan_bayne@emacs.ch avatar

@rms The Government of Palestine - democratically elected some years ago before they ended democracy there - has the liquidation of the state of Israel as their stated aim.

I applaud the sentiment of bringing them closer together, but I don't see how you could even begin that process so long as Hamas remains in power.

Politicians say mask bans should come back as pre-COVID, they were law since 1845.

But scientists discovered viruses in the 1890s, discovered how they worked in the mid-1900s, and discovered SARS in the 2000s.

Mask bans are outdated, anti-science laws that belong in the past.

duncan_bayne ,
@duncan_bayne@emacs.ch avatar

@luckytran I'd have thought a better legislative approach would be to consider masking an aggravating factor in the commission of a crime, but not a crime in and of itself.

The strange thing about living in Australia is you're used to terrible, nocturnal screeching things, many of which fly. You're used to spiders as big as your hand, or ignoring one of the 10 most deadly snakes turning up while you're walking around the block. You're used to, on a hike, running into furry things as tall as you hopping around the place while carrying their young in flesh pouches.

But raccoons? That’s so weird. They're real things? For serious? That rummage through your garbage?

duncan_bayne ,

@vampiress I mean ... they're just cockatoos that can't fly right?

The sheer ambition of this tiny Camponotus discolor minor who I followed after she escaped... to the enclosure of the dubias. They are 30 times her size. She is alone, can't get back to her nest. Nonetheless she tries to chew her way into the the dubia enclosure, biting the metal screen. So she can "get" them.

I've said it would be like if a person hung around a cattle yard with a knife in one hand. a fork in the other licking their chops... but it's more like doing that for IDK some sauropods?

@vampiress What's astounding to me is how he (Pichai) bullshits. Looking at his background, that fits: he's an ex McKinsey management consultant.

I've worked with good executives, who give straight and often uncomfortable answers to difficult questions, usually in-between asking difficult questions of their own.

Judging purely by this interview, Pichai is not one of those rare creatures.

I want a full sized iPad again, so I think I'm going to sell my Mini and buy one.

duncan_bayne ,

@vampiress Huh interesting.

I've taken the opposite approach with mine and my kids' hardware: buy a brace of cheap ex-corporate ThinkPads, and replace components as they fail. Cheaper than new given the kids "bump" them a lot. (Our kids have dropped laptops out of their loft beds before now).

That said: none of us have particularly demanding use cases for our laptops.

My wife on the other hand gets the good stuff. She's running a Ryzen Framework 13, and loving it.

Just as you thought the Putin regime could not go any lower… In Russia, there is now a proposal to perform checks of a person's sexuality, so as to prevent the hiring of gays in the public sector — in a country where the state dominates many industries.

And the state tv debate is not about why this is wrong, but about how to reveal homosexuality most effectively.

And Russia calls other countries nazi states — take a look in the mirror Vladimir!

The parliament of Denmark today signed a law which ads USD 14 billion to the Danish defence budget, in order to finance a an armored brigade with 6000 soldiers, tanks and armored vehicles. As part of the deal, young women will now be force conscripted into the military.

Listen it's very simple. The president can't be prosecuted for any official act.

Some worry warts keep asking "well what if the president tells the military to stage a coup?" Always with the "what about a coup?" questions! Listen, Cassandra, we have a safe guard: if something so bad (and unlikely pfft) as a coup happened the congress would obviously impeach the president. Happy? No?

We don't need a judicial check AND a legislative one too. That's too much! The president must be free!

The use of "credits" as a name for space opera currency has always irrationally bugged me. Just the idea that everyone is living off actual honest to god bank credit sounds horribly dystopian, whether or not that's the point.

duncan_bayne ,
@duncan_bayne@emacs.ch avatar

@futurebird So ... this is the exact argument, in reverse, that I've been having with people about entities like the Federal Labour Board, FCC, FDA, etc.

Starting with the labour board they were jammed through as "technically legal" after FDR personally pressured the supreme court to accept the commerce code excuse.

From the perspective of a non-American it looks like this is just how it goes. One "side" bends the rules egregiously, while complaining about the other "side" doing it. Rinse and repeat.

duncan_bayne ,
@duncan_bayne@emacs.ch avatar

@futurebird Yeah but people mostly don't see it that way. E.g. people who simultaneously strongly oppose recent overreach by the Democrats, while simultaneously strongly opposing Tesla's lawsuit against the constitutionality of the labour board.

    @vampiress to quote Churchill,

    "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…"

    He said democracy but might as well have said capitalism; the two have been hand-in glove at scale since forever. All attempts at de-gloving (ewww) have been disasters.
