#FridaysForFuture I'm a German scientist for future. Very concerned about dangers to coming generations through CO2, nuclear waste, nuclear war, mass extinction. Sustainability dear to my heart since reading "limits to growth" in 1978, never owned a car in my life. #hamradio #AmateurRadio QRP 5W inner city apartment amateur radio station. How do I download a list of all accounts that follow mine?

That does not seem to be functionality offered by the export function of Mastodon, where I expected this.

I found a list in my profile, but that's paginated. Do I need to rig up a script to defeat the pagination? Or is there an easier way?

I have not checked how moving the active personal account from one Fediverse server to the next actually works, technically. How does the new server get my follower list?

Every Mastodon server has three main timelines:

"Home" - Your main feed, where you see all the accounts and hashtags you follow

"Local" - All the latest public posts by everyone on your server

"Federated" - All the public posts by all the accounts your server has noticed across the Fediverse

(You can also create your own custom timelines using the "Lists" feature.)

There is more info about how to view these timelines and how to use them here:

What do you think, @FediTips : Should one argue that "Notifications" is another timeline? Sure feels like it to me.

When you have successfully followed someone on here, the "Follow" button on their profile turns into "Following" or "Unfollow". However, if it turns into "Cancel Follow" or "Pending" or "Request Sent", then the follow hasn't actually happened yet.

Usually this means the account has follow requests switched on, indicated by a 🔒 padlock icon on their profile.

In other cases it may be a technical glitch, and you may need to cancel and try again later.

My account is generally open for follows.

Generally. But my server's admin has implemented a rule that follow requests from msstodon.social need to be approved manually. Which is a good thing. While I generally approve the follow request after a short check, I already had one by a very dubious account which I decided to not approve.

So that's another entry for your list why a follow request might not come through, or not come through immediately.

Anyone can create their own Fediverse server, it's cheaper and easier than most people realise.

If you're non-technical you can use a managed hosting provider, they do the techy stuff for you behind the scenes. I run a website with info about managed hosting at https://growyourown.services and it has an account at @homegrown

If you're moderately technical, check out @yunohost at https://yunohost.org

If you're very technical, use manual installation (e.g. Mastodon at https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/prerequisites).

Carefully reading what you wrote, @FediTips , I wonder whether you didn't implicitly give one piece of advice on connecting to Bluesky: Don't do it.

The third party Android app Fedilab (which lets you use Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Friendica etc) is now free on Google Play, and continues to be free on F-Droid too. If you haven't tried it yet, this might be a good time:

(It was previously paid on Google Play and free on F-Droid.)

There's a review of the app on the fedi.tips website:

@FediTips , you might want to review your review text below the "Not sure one way or other" headline, it contradicts your toot content.

Anyone who has played a recreational sport or played a board game with friends—probably most people—has personal experience with consensual rules that don’t require a ruler or coercive enforcement.

And yet.

Many people will struggle to conceive of life without rulers or coercive enforcement, and envision anarchism as simply violent chaos.

dj3ei ,
@dj3ei@mastodon.radio avatar

My fear is: If you remove state policing, you get war lords, mafia, street gangs, charismatic fanatical "Führer" figures from within and Viking raids from without. A small minority of uncivilized people are enough to arm themselves and terrorize the civilized majority. The theory: Such evil power structures spring up when the state police is gone and leaves a vacuum.

What do you, @HeavenlyPossum , as an anarchist propose should hinder such criminal power structures from developing?

There's a strong tradition on here that you should add alt text descriptions to any images, videos or audio files you attach to a post. These descriptions are important because they make attachments accessible to blind and/or deaf people

However, some people can't write alt texts due to their own disabilities. If that's the case, they can include the tag #Alt4Me in their post to request help. Others who want to help can reply with an alt text description and the tag #Alt4You.

Many German government offices toot
👍.

IANAL, but understand Germany has a law https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/bgg/index.html and rules https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/bitv_2_0/index.html that demand accessibility of all media produced by German federal agencies.

Some provide this consistently (e.g., our foreign ministry @AuswaertigesAmt 😊), others break that law emberassingly often (e.g., our migration+refugee office @bamf 😢).

If you follow a German "Bundesbehörde", please kindly watch out and lobby for accessibility!

Custom emoji are added to Mastodon etc by a server's admin. Anyone can see them from other servers, but only people on that server can use them.

For example :amiga: is a custom emoji.

To see your server's custom emoji, click the 🙂 icon. (On mobile apps this is within the app itself, standard emoji are accessed via the on-screen keyboard.)

Any image or animation can be a custom emoji, ask your server's admin if you have a suggestion.

My server offers some custom emoji which I happen to not like. To insert any of the usual emojis, I typically call another application, enter my wanted emoji there, and copy+paste it to my app. Tusky on google-free Android here, if that matters any. I see no way to enter standard emojis "via the on-screen keyboard".
