We are living in an age of denial. Denial of a genocide. Denial of an ongoing pandemic. Denial of a climate crisis.

Acknowledging reality is an act of rebellion.

The top 0.1% of Americans control $20 trillion in wealth.

The bottom 50% control $3.7 trillion in wealth.

Read that back.

Folks, this is what oligarchy looks like.

In an interview on Israeli television, former Mossad official Rami Igra said all Palestinians in Gaza over the age of 4 are “involved” and deserve to face Israel’s collective punishment policy of withholding food and humanitarian aid.

When hydrocarbon barons do their damndest to torch the Earth with fossil fuels, they call us dreamers. They insist that there's a hard-nosed reality - humanity needs energy - and they're the ones who live in it, while we live in the fairy land where the world can run on sunshine and virtuous thoughts. Without them making the tough decisions, we'd all be starving in the frigid dark.

“Mass deportations are going to start, if you don’t like that, then don’t vote for President Trump.”

@philip_cardella @DemocracyMattersALot I think that would require millions of young healthy, unemployed thugs. So, he has a lot of political and economic preparation to do first.

While Wendy’s plans to price gouge you with Uber-style surge pricing, it’s simultaneously enriching wealthy shareholders with a $500 million stock buyback program.

That’s the thing about corporate greed: It’s shameless.

They’ll just keep pushing to see how far they can go.

davidreinertson ,

@rbreich It’s fine. Higher and lower prices based on demand. If people don’t like the uncertainty, they won’t go.

HEADLINE: "Oil Industry Deceived Public on Plastics Recycling for More Than 50 Years"

Is anyone surprised by this? Of course they lied. That's what capitalists do. They ALWAYS put profits ahead of truthfulness, ahead of human rights, ahead of a healthy biosphere.

Here's more...

The plastics industry has ‘sold’ plastic recycling to the American public to sell plastic, according to a report by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCI), a nonprofit organization that advocates for legal action to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.

Petrochemical companies and the plastics industry have known of the technical and economic limitations that make plastics unrecyclable for more than half a century, and “have failed to overcome them,” the report states. “Despite this knowledge, the plastics industry has continued to increase plastic production, while carrying out a well-coordinated campaign to deceive consumers, policymakers, and regulators about plastic recycling.”

“This evidence shows that many of the same fossil fuel companies that knew and lied for decades about how their products cause climate change have also known and lied to the public about plastic recycling,” Richard Wiles, CCI’s president, said in a press release. “The oil industry’s lies are at the heart of the two most catastrophic pollution crises in human history.”

Plastics manufacturers and industry groups, including some of the largest oil and gas companies in the world, have spent more than 50 years funding and pushing plastics recycling in order to stave off regulatory action – all while knowing that only a small fraction of plastic waste could ever be recycled.

@breadandcircuses I checked the link in the article. They seem honest.
I think the idea is a tax or a prohibition on plastic.
Is that a fair summary?

It annoys me how people talk about using social media like it's a vice. And a female-coded one at that.

"Spend less time on social media" is trotted out a virtuous in the same way that "not eating a pint of ice cream" is.

Imagine if in the early days of movable type, there were people going around saying "don't read pamphlets, they are full of misinformation"

Social media is the primary way news is disseminated. It is superseding newspapers and TV as the primary vector of mass media. 1/

Via Angry Staffer about the Ultra Super Duper Secret classified intel that Turner blabbed about (supposedly Russian nuke capabilities):

Couple things here:

The public doesn’t need to know about this. They can’t do shit about it anyway.

Our enemies don’t need to know that we know it.

Now, both things have happened because a Republican can’t keep his mouth shut.

He very well could have compromised a source.

davidreinertson ,

@GottaLaff I thought the reason we don’t orbit bombs 150 miles above other countries is the same reason we don’t fly jet planes with bombs 10 miles over other countries.
It’s not because wa can’t, but because they would immediately shoot them down.
This doesn’t seem new.
