Maybe we need to make some space to have conversations about the way that rigid gender expectations can hurt people. I'm not talking about trans people, exclusively (in fact the trans people I know are among the most sophisticated when it comes to processing these kinds of events and emotions)

No, where I see a lot of unprocessed trauma flailing around putting everyone in a bad way is from cis people who have unexamined psychological harm due to their failure to conform to some gender norm. 1/

@justafrog @daisy @futurebird US take: in my gen even girly girls avoided pink; under patriarchy its image exists only counterpoint an adult man. Women were formerly eternal legal minors; it's remembered in breathy baby tones & baby pink, infantile, devoidof agency at any age. A babydoll can refer to a child's toy, or lingerie; the owner belongs to someone else.

A child trying to be seen as a person, girl OR boy, oft stands as far from that as possible.

Do you like toads?

cwicseolfor ,
@cwicseolfor@urbanists.social avatar

@loren I always loved toads, but when I was about nine and trying to enjoy a summer evening on the back stoop in our resident toad’s company, he saved me from the sudden appearance of two very large cockroaches in quick succession, and I’ve felt great loyalty ever since.

I have a soft spot for Libertarians even though I shouldn't and they don't deserve it. When I was a kid I had a weird neighbor who was always giving me Libertarian books... I wish I still had some of them they were WILD. He was a thorn in the side of the local, school board as well insisting that if they had an event at the school that involved politics Libertarians had to be included.

And in defense of the guy, he was about as likable and earnest as a Libertarian could be.

@futurebird @billiglarper Texan here with the same experience, as they tended to be the remaining ideological conservatives post 9/11. The commitment to principles (vs. cults of personality) was often there, albeit frequently next to gaping blind spots about unequal access to power in the present day.

The political culture pivoted to strict with-or-against-us cults of religious fervor starting 9/11 through tea party up to the last admin. All emotion, no thought.

@appassionato @palestine Al Jazeera headline and infographic. “1.8 million people squeezed into area smaller than airport:
The Israeli army has told Khan Younis residents to evacuate to a "humanitarian zone" in al-Mawasi about half the size of Heathrow Airport.” Below are maps comparing an area of Heathrow Airport, 6.5sq km, to al-Mawasi “humanitarian zone,” 6.5sq km (2.5sq miles)

Why aren't Korean rice cakes huge in the US yet? This is a simple, satisfying, not very nutritionally redeemable (so acceptable to Americans), comfort food that's basically pasta but more massive (and made of rice) or the tougher, more awesome cousin of "white bread"

Now that it's possible to make it shelf stable and easy to boil... what is the hang up?

Food Solid No.1 Should rule the world.

@futurebird @nathanu I think it’s more an inability to figure out spices to give them flavor. You have to have something delicious and preferably made of sugar and fire to slather them in. So basically it’ll happen when it gets popular in the restaurants and then some US label sells it frozen with a packaged beef & sauce packet.

I first had them at a Korean restaurant in Shanghai in the aughts & was immediately in love. Hard to find here though.

@dillyd The way the conventions shift to match or mismatch drives me nuts as a multi-OS user (this also happens going from Nintendo to Sony, who have their confirm/ cancel in reverse positions.) MacOS for at least a few years has been command-space to switch keyboards.

@futurebird Active (or as active as I have energy for) participation in communities is the big one.
Also: Using an efficient dehumidifier instead of AC when possible. Celebrating when I acclimate to an additional indoor degree and we make it another hour later in the evening before the AC kicks on, in scorching inland Texas (86° is fine if it's dry.) Adding radiant barrier & insulation to increase passive comfort. Working on electrifying gas utilities, promoting others doing the same.

@futurebird Planning on plantings that will improve shade - even one more deciduous tree will help. More native plants to reduce water needs & retention in the soil, to cast more shade, feed wildlife. I'd like to get back to gardening my own leafy greens for just that much less refrigeration & transit fuel use - MY power supply is green, but the transit trucks & distributors' aren't. Researching heat-reflective paint for albedo effect. Composting EVERYTHING. Buying little & ever-less.

@futurebird Working on creating more of a culture of shared goods (e.g. tools) within my social circle to reduce inclination to buy one-everything-per-household - eventually I'd like this to be neighborhood-based, but I'm starting small to learn. The overwhelming majority of emissions aren't from needs! They're driven by consumption for consumption's sake (that is, driven by advertising.) We could be happier, healthier, richer, safer without it.
