I don't see this working. Not only the property owners would transfer this cost to your monthly payments, the government would need an enormous bureaucracy to actually control and enforce this law. I don't believe this is technically possible to achieve.

Cars are not animals, they don't have subtle body movements that you could read. If you can see what the car is doing, it is already too late. The idea of turn signals is that you let other drivers know in advance. Even if they are "stupid" and can't "read" your car. Even if you are stupid and you are doing something really stupid, signals give people around you time to notice you and avoid you. We drive to get from point A to point B, and different rules and mechanisms are there to make the whole process safer. Go feel superiority somewhere else.

Eventually somebody will rent it, and the monthly price will be higher to recoup the tax.

As an unattractive person I find this terminology comfortable.

I was in the past (almost one year ago). This is how the world looked back then.

What color should the blue screen of death be if not blue! I guess it's coming from Windows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_screen_of_death

An early blue error screen first existed in the Beta Release of Windows 1.0; if Windows found a different DOS version than it expected, the error message "Incorrect DOS version" alongside other text messages detailing what check failed to pass would be appended to the boot screen before starting normally.

Gmail is a service. A client is a client. A client can't be an alternative to a service just like Firefox can't be an alternative to Lemmy.

The title says:

An alternative to Gmail

If the title is misleading, the problem is not on my side.

I use Debian on my home server and CentOS on my VPS.

Since I installed Arch 14 years ago, I've never looked back. I guess I'm happy with it!

Isn't there more active !linux already?

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I was looking at weekly and monthly stats, as well as the amount of subscribers. Though I agree that the most recent data shows that !linux is probably more active. And this community fits programming.dev more. I'll subscribe to both and see where it goes :s

When it comes to preserving my data? Yes. Though I'd be concerned about privacy of my diary too, I get your point. Public code is one thing, but personal notes is another.

Didn't I answer this question in my previous reply?

I like the idea, but I don't like that everything is tied to a single account. If it's compromised so are your emails, calendar, contacts, files, and passwords. But the service is good enough to replace Google, and choosing between the two, I'd choose Proton.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Should we do that though? I'm choosing between playing PS5 and configuring my home server. I'm not being paid for either of that. But skills I obtain while tinkering with the server actually help me with some tasks at work.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

That's true. But as we were speaking about an external service (Proton), I was thinking about diversification. I use Proton for emails, but I don't use Proton Pass opting for another external password manager.

cheddar ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

I agree. I was thinking about using different services for different tasks instead of putting everything into the same basket. I'm not self-hosting an email server either.

Quite often I see replies like "don't open ports, use tailscale". Maybe they mix different reasons and solutions, confusing people like me :D

cheddar OP ,
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Yep, VPN makes it easier to access different services. Connect once, open anything you want in the local service. But I can set up WG without a VPS. To me that extra layer seems unnecessary.

That's what I was thinking too. Thank you!
