This is dumb but also it’s amusing

bamboo ,

This is the most fear mongering nonsense I’ve read on Lemmy to date

bamboo ,

This is the kind of crap that makes me glad flatpak and such exist. I don’t want a maintainer making arbitrary decisions like this, it adds unpredictability and platform inconsistency.

A similar issue I face is that on Debian the python stdlib well.. isn’t all standard. In particular they split off the venv package, and it’s an extra step that adds unnecessary complication. No other Linux distros or other OS do this, it’s so frustrating. I guess someone is super happy they saved a few hundreds kilobytes of disk space though.

The terrorism and terrorist labels are already selectively applied by people in power in a way that means little more than “people we don’t like”. Take for example how the west don’t consider organizations like the IDF terrorists, but do consider Hamas to be terrorists, despite their activities being widely protected under international law. Or consider how Yemen’s government has had the label applied and removed based on concessions given to the US.

“The United States voted against the resolution, along with Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea.”

bamboo ,

What infuriates me is this:

“[T]he United States has made clear that it will block Palestinian membership and statehood until direct negotiations with Israel resolve key issues, including security, boundaries and the future of Jerusalem.”

Why does Israel get membership in the UN, if these are preconditions for membership? Israel will never agree to Palestinian membership. A stable Palestinian state will likely never exist until Israel is defeated militarily and has no choice but to accept it.

bamboo ,

To whatever extent Israeli civilians are more moderate, they’ve never truly been able to affect change. Israel’s history only started with a terrorist campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Rabin’s efforts are truly exceptional in Israel’s history, and he was murdered for it. The return to genocide is simply a return to the norm.

Even if Israeli moderates were to win political power, it would only be temporary. Israeli terrorists saw no problem ethnically cleansing the land to invent their own state with only people they approved of, and if popular sentiment turns away, they no doubt would do it again to remove the new “undesirables”.

bamboo ,

This is insanely cool! I want more house plants now

bamboo ,

Taken a step back and considered how they got where they did, and determine what steps could be taken for a long term peace. Well, I guess they did that but decided their path to peace involved killing every last Palestinian, a final solution if you will.

bamboo ,

You are supporting genocide but have the gall to call someone else a Nazi? That’s rich

bamboo ,

That’s some adorable little animal abuse right there

If the justification is that AM radio is useful in emergency scenarios, the sound quality is largely irrelevant. As long as you can make out instructions and warnings that might be given after a disaster (such as “Avoid area A due to flooding”, “Heated shelter available at schools”), then it’s serving its point. Whether it’s good for music or talk shows isn’t the point here.

First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

The Overton window is not something that can be changed electorally. Candidates can only get on the ballot in the first place if they’re within the Overton window, as anybody outside the window is “radical” or “extreme”, and the existing political powers forbid their candidacy. The electoral window is moved outside the electoral process, and only then can the electoral system permit new candidates with new ideas.

Does the PA actually have anything to do with these potential ICC warrants? Or is Israel basically threatening a hostage situation?

Fired Google workers ousted over Israeli contract protests file complaint with labor regulators ( apnews.com )

Dozens of Google workers who were fired after internal protests surrounding a lucrative contract that the technology company has with the Israeli government have filed a complaint with labor regulators in an attempt to get their jobs back....

bamboo ,

Strikes only have so many restrictions because the US government would like to effectively outlaw them without appearing to have outlawed them.

bamboo ,

Love it or hate it, the US is still the largest economy

bamboo ,

I don’t see how this is even particularly generous. It’s a 40 day slowdown in genocide and an agreement for Hamas to release prisoners in exchange for Israel temporarily releasing hostages that historically they just re-abduct within days anyways. And then after 40 days it’s full speed ahead of civilian slaughter again, probably with a freshly regrouped and re-armed IOF.

bamboo ,

Not only that, if they actually read the article, it’s just vague accusations from Israel and NATO, absolutely nothing specific, followed by a bunch of analysis that shows the claims are inaccurate and intentionally misleading.

bamboo ,

I could have worded it better. I’m not necessarily saying that Israel will re-abduct the exact same Palestinians within a few days, but rather than Israel is constantly taking hostages. Israel could agree to release 100 hostages, but what’s the point when they’ll end up abducting 200 more the following week. It’s why prisoner swaps with Israel heavily favor Israel, they see hostages as a renewable ressource.

bamboo ,

The police view the dying side effect as a bonus, not a problem. Dead men tell no stories.

bamboo ,

A united and reinvigorated PLO operating from both the West Bank and Gaza would be the most likely way to realize an independent Palestinian state. The real question though remains about what to do with the Israeli state and occupiers. Any Palestinian state will be under constant threat from both individual Israeli terrorists and terror organizations like the IDF, many of which have effectively settled in the West Bank. There would likely need to be some UN-backed peacekeeping operation to safeguard Palestine even with full recognition of independence.

bamboo ,

r/worldnews there absolutely does. Several years ago I said that Hamas has the support it does because of Israeli aggression and its active stance against them. My comment was deleted and I was banned for “terrorist apologia”. It’s not even allowed to try and understand the situation impartially.

bamboo ,

Is the US really leaning away from Israel though. They’re still actively funding and aiding them.

Leaked NYT Gaza Memo Tells Journalists to Avoid Words “Genocide,” “Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Occupied Territory” ( theintercept.com )

The New York Times instructed journalists covering Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip to restrict the use of the terms “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” and to “avoid” using the phrase “occupied territory” when describing Palestinian land, according to a copy of an internal memo obtained by The Intercept....

bamboo ,

Being told to restrict usage of “Palestine” when talking about Palestine is truly something else. I guess “journalistic integrity” means holding equal the opinions of Nazis and real people, which covers “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing”. But occupied territory? What else is it then?

bamboo ,

As a silver lining, at least it’s terrible at it

bamboo ,

I support Iran’s defensive actions against Israeli aggression. I hope Iran chooses military and intelligence targets instead of civilian ones, in compliance with international law, despite Israel targeting primarily civilians in their war of conquest.

bamboo ,

I am biased against genocide, wars of conquest, and bombing civilians. You got me

bamboo ,

How noisy are these? I have a pair of shucked WD drives that should be equivalent to reds, and they’re pretty noisy in my otherwise quiet home office. Given they’re only 8TB, upgrading them to SSDs for full silence is something in considering as soon as the pricing and availability permits.

bamboo ,

As far as I know there is only one SSD model that meets my criteria (Samsung 870 QVO 8TB), and at $520 right now so I’ve decided it’s best to wait. I’d like it to be quieter but not so badly as to spend $1k on it (need two).

bamboo ,

The actual goal is genocide, any other stated justification is a lie. They’ve successfully killed tens of thousands, and are certainly going to attempt new settlements and permanent military rule in Gaza, unless the international community intervenes.

bamboo ,

Why bother when the US will just re-label them terrorists 5 minutes later?

bamboo ,

Just about every understanding of “the west” tends to exclude Russia

bamboo ,

FLAC is compressed, but unlike lossy codecs like AAC and MP3, FLAC is fully lossless. Lossy codecs delete information the authors believe you won’t notice, lossless compression keeps all the data and just tries to fit it in a smaller space. The original recording can be perfectly reproduced (taking into account sample rate and depth).

bamboo ,

Blocking a large messaging platform because a minority of people are using it for piracy, of all things, seems extremely disproportionate

bamboo ,

Good, hopefully the rest of the west will follow.

bamboo ,

By the time he’s done, any semblance of Argentinian sovereignty will be handed over to western financiers.

bamboo ,

While I’m not an expert in anything vaguely related, I would bet that those “adverse life/childhood experiences” have more of a causal effect on lifespan than the abortions.

bamboo ,

Interesting how here in the US we talk about Russia being a place where anyone who speaks up ends up falling out a window, yet we also have a long track record of killing anyone who speaks truth to power. We only give a venir of dissent, if you see some public figure challenging the government, it’s safe to bet that their campaign isn’t a threat to the ruling class in some way.

bamboo ,

Is there any point at which the US would allow international pressure to end this genocide? When does it become strategically disadvantageous?

bamboo ,

It’s not that Trump wouldn’t support the genocide, he certainly would. But as long as Democrats feel they can also support the genocide without repercussions, they will do so to enrich themselves. Republicans aren’t going to change, there’s little point trying to push them on this. But if democrats think that this issue is the difference between winning and losing an election (and thus potentially limiting their ability to enrich themselves), there’s a smidge of a chance they’d at least cut funding or something.

bamboo ,

Biden is gonna get slaughtered in November. It might even be the final nail in the coffin for American democracy. All because Joe here couldn’t not enthusiastically fund a genocide occurring in plain sight.

bamboo ,

The difference is that Mexican immigrants in the US aren’t trying to genocide existing residents and steal the entirety of their land. They just want to have a good life and coexist. That isn’t enough for Zionists though.

bamboo ,

“Your home and everything you’ve worked for will be completely destroyed in 15 minutes, flee while you can. We are good guys btw”

bamboo ,

Oh they’re doing something about it, they’re funding, supplying and defending the genocide on the world stage.

bamboo ,

Unless you live in the EU or California, odds are that just deletes the public data, I’m sure Reddit retains it and would sell it.
