@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io

ADHD astronomer doing postdoc things at Queen's University Belfast. Interested in exoplanet atmospheres and distant solar system bodies, but mostly I write open-source research software and do very little science. Good at Python for an astronomer (bad at Python).

Outside of work: part-time k-pop stan, full-time queer nuisance. Also reading good novels, writing bad novels, gaming, cross-stitching, and accumulating new hobbies.

Opinions mine, not my employer's. I'm much cooler.

this cat came indoors, saw me sitting at the dining table on my laptop, and meowed at me very loudly and insistently until I stopped what I was doing, sat in the recliner, AND fully reclined it so she could sit on my legs. she is now purring very noisily and with a definite air of smugness.

happy from me and Millie.

the face of a cat who did not show up for her breakfast but instead rolled up at twenty to four in the afternoon and STILL EXPECTED HER BREAKFAST

...of course I gave it to her.

...and I also gave her a treat.

Well, I did promise I'd come out to my brother if a non-binary performer won so I guess I'd better do it now. Just give me until tomorrow, I want to enjoy tonight without wanting to stress-vomit 😅

One benefit of not being on my meds is that I can drink coffee again. In fact, I can perform mine and my dad's usual party trick of drinking a big mug of strong coffee then promptly falling asleep for eight solid hours.

It legit took me decades to work out that coffee really does make other people feel more physically awake and it wasn't just a metaphor or something.

Once upon a time, I could mainline coffee all day with zero adverse effects and be productive. But then I got older and now caffeine affects me the "normal" way. I need to watch my intake, not just quantity but time of day as well.

It's still so wild to me that I have to import melatonin from the US because you can only get it on prescription here and even then for some reason it's only recommended to be prescribed to the over-50s.

I have insomnia ( brain never shuts up) and melatonin works pretty well. If I go to the doctor they will prescribe me sleeping pills and I do not want to take sleeping pills, actually, not if I don't have to. 🙄

BeAware ,

@astronomerritt that's wild! I have the same insomnia issues for the same reasons and also use melatonin every few days.

Though I am in the US so I don't have these issues of course. It's fascinating and sometimes shitty to see the different laws over the world.

@BeAware Yeah, it's really annoying and I don't understand it! In some ways having increased oversight on food and drugs here (compared to the US) is great, but in some ways it's really kind of shitty.
