If you want to see a case study on parasocial relationships, check out the online sturm und drang about Watcher Entertainment leaving YouTube and starting their own subscription-based streaming service. Now, I've enjoyed their videos over the years, but not enough to subscribe, so I mentally wished them well and moved on. But holy hell, check out social media and you'll find it filled with rage over this perceived economic, ideological, and very personal betrayal.

Yeah, I find this type of thing complicated because I largely don't have the money to support such projects, but seriously, I'm actually quite happy for the creators I like who have found ways to stop being totally at the mercy of corporate giants. I'm not familiar with Watcher Entertainment specifically, but I think projects like Nebula or the success of Dropout TV are, in general, good things. I want more alternatives!

Here are two dominant aspects of shitlib morality with regards to Hamas.

  1. Don't praise a resistance struggle unless it's as clean as I am comfortable with (never happened in history, unlikely ever to happen). Better condemn it because there is blood (or) They din't just kill only "military" people.
  2. Claiming both sides are gangsters, which is a farcical position to hold — even as an anarchist, as that erases the legitimacy question entirely & it ignores the circumstance under which one side is forced to resort to violence.

In my view, both are short-sighted views (history will judge me too as much as it judges who hold those other views — may be I will be proven wrong too, as it's Palestinians who are going to decide what they are going to honour & we will have 3rd party perspectives too). We only have to read histories of many societies in 3rd world beyond sanitised versions to know why those views are short sighted.

Oppressed are not looking for our approval on how they need to break their chains. They want them broken & are not looking for the certification from those who are not subjected to the same violence. We will only understand that when we are subjected to exactly that long enough, not pretending we can understand that from a distance.

If Palestinians gets rid of apartheid, genocide & settler colonialism — as part of a single political entity/seperate entity or as any other political formation, my guess is Oct 7th will be remembered as martyrs day (or) day of attempted rebellion (or) Intifada (or) something of that sort, atleast so far as I can see it based on what I know from struggles in history.

Clapping about history & revolutions after someone obtained liberation is not same as distancing oneself from the history while it happens. What I know for a fact is Oct 7th is a historical day for Palestinian liberation struggle, however later events turns out.

I know it's difficult to form ones morality distinct from dominant morality that claims to talk about so called peace while being most violent, but grey areas is the most substantive area to explore before we form our own morality. Black & white is too idiotic to even think about as things of consequence never fall on those edges — esp when it comes to difficult things like taking on power.

Yes, the inescapable problem of condemning the violence of the oppressed is that you have to ask whether they would be able to end the violence inflicted on them by any "proper" means. If the answer is "no," then we are saying they must submit to their own annihilation while we sadly shake our heads about how tragic their plight is.

    And yet they STILL don't have data privacy and security policies.

    Okay, seriously, if I were neurotypical would I know the answer to the question what I am expected to do if there are two single occupancy toilets, and they are labeled 'men' and 'women'? Am I supposed to wait for the women's one to open up even if no one is in the men's?

    Because if I can use either, why are they labeled? It's ridiculous to wait when there's an open restroom, but again, why are the signs there?

    artemis OP ,
    @artemis@dice.camp avatar

    When I was a little kid I was terrified someone would yell at me if I tried to use the "men's" room, but I didn't want to be caught waiting for the restroom and laughed at for NOT using the other one either. There were times I just decided to "hold it" because it was too stressful of a decision .

    Saw a genocidal "analyst" come up with a poster where they wrote down who the enemies of Israel are.

    They wrote:

    Iran, Hezbollah, Houthis, Hamas, UN, ….

    In one of the box they wrote Islamists & next phrase is Radical Leftists.

    They dint write Nazis, Far right Fascists who are actual scum of the earth because the person who wrote that list knows, by being a supporter of Israel, they are Nazis themselves. They also know Nazis around the world are largely their allies (barring tiny bit of Nazis who hate Israel for actual antisemitic reasons).

    I really didn't understand until recently how much time and effort Israel has put into stoking anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiments around the world, but it seems to pay off well for them: you can surprisingly easily make "friends" with people who hate you if you can get them to hate and fear your "enemies" more.

    It does make for a weird situation where someone who was yelling antisemitic slurs just last week will pop up THIS week to tell you you're antisemitic.

    So I greatly enjoyed , but when I started reading reviews of it, I started to wonder if I watched the same film these people did.

    All the reviews say it's an examination of "cancel culture", and while I can't deny that "cancel culture" is one of the things that comes up, I definitely thought it was a lot more about a toxic, fragile white man and his relationship to a society that ends up shunning him because of the massive red flags he gives off.

    artemis OP ,

    @thoughtpunks I'm starting to think some people don't want to understand the art of film, because the thing about art is that it's significantly harder to make good art that is fundamentally conservative. As Jason Sattler notes, with the IVF debacle, Republicans are trying to lie re: what their "life begins at conception" mantra really means. But supporters like Lila Rose won't let them lie: shey says,

    “Politicians cannot call themselves ‘pro-life,’ affirm the truth that human life begins at the moment of fertilization, and then enact laws that allow the callous killing of these preborn children simply because they were created through IVF."

    @wdlindsy
    I was going to nitpick & say based on my experience that's not true and some people (not politicians) really do believe life begins at conception, but tbh it's more like they believe that they believe that, because no one—no one—actually lives their life in a way consistent with this belief. It's impossible.

    You would have to believe that a baby dies every time a fertilized egg does not implant, which means even aside from abortion, "unborn babies" are dying at an alarming rate.

    As the sort of person who accidentally touches screens because sometimes I utterly lack self-awareness (ADHD is fun), I feel many ppl need more practice just saying "sorry, my bad" when someone points out a rude behavior & moving on, trying to not do it again.

    It's 1 thing my parents got right: teaching us that when you mess up, even in a small way, you don't make it someone else's problem. It's hard on a wounded ego—can feel like eating shit—but ppl respect you more in the long-term.

    I cannot take you seriously if you use the phrase "gender ideology" to apply to the stance that society doesn't arbitrarily get to define who you are on a fundamental level based on minor physical differences.

    "Gender ideology" is apparently not when you espouse a belief in immutable "biology" that happens to align just exactly with our current cultural practices.

    It's only "ideology" if you challenge that belief.

    Don't sleep on your local and federated feeds, especially if you chose a server related to an interest of yours.
