Central Cascades

I was trying to find a location with less rain showers this weekend and somehow ended up camping in the mountains. 🤔 Today was so fun and I want to remember that when the snow showers start in the morning. The mountain views have been stunning. Seeing how close I can get to Mount Washington tomorrow. Maybe the weather will be totally fine but I’m prepared to bail if I’m not able to stay warm.

Square Lake at sunrise. Orange and purple clouds reflect into a relatively calm alpine lake. White mist floats above the lake in the distance. A few trees are on the opposite shore.
Three Fingered Jack. The large jagged rocky peak has three points, for the three fingers. An alpine meadow with some gray dead tree trunks are in front of the mountain. New green trees are thriving in the fire’s wake. Portions of the dark rock and ridge line are covered in white snow, but the peak is not. Beautiful blue skies.
The Old Summit Trail enters the Jefferson Wilderness. A sign on trail right says Mount Jefferson Wilderness, Deschutes National Forest. The trail traverses an exposed forest with some green trees and some burnt ones. Light blue sky with artistic white clouds.

PCT Section H Backpacking

After last weekend’s nightmare fuel, I’m in heaven once again. Hiked 2,100 feet up to a small mountain peak in the Cascades. No one around for miles. Views of Mount Hood and Adams outside my tent. Trees are blocking the light west wind. I packed out honey buns for breakfast. Couldn’t feel better. 😍🤣🏔️

PCT Section H: Part 2

Enjoyed the section from Rock Creek to Wind River Road. Retreated back home Saturday evening to avoid an impending atmospheric river. Bunker Hill was the most surprising feature along this small section, wish I would’ve had the time to climb it. Current plan for this weekend is to continue north to see what the snow situation is like on the ground.

PCT Section H: Part 3

Back on the trail heading north toward the Indian Heaven Wilderness. I’m excited to see what the snow conditions are on the ground. That will determine what happens next. I don’t have an ice ax or know how to use one (yet) but I have micro spikes and the sense to turn around when it gets sketchy. 😁 Planning to explore Big Huckleberry Mountain and maybe Grassy Knoll if I can’t get too far north.

PCT Section H: Part 4

Didn’t make it as far as I imagined but I did encounter patches of snow starting around mile 2199. Went back a couple miles and camped near a spring for water. Should make it to Indian Heaven in the morning but will have to start heading south midday. I believe this is my first backpacking trip this year exploring an all new area and I’m loving it. Washington is a very beautiful and special state.

The Pacific Crest Trail travels by lush green plants with yellow flowers. A few small purple flowers are also on the right side of the trail. Tall tree trunks ahead.

Pacific Crest Trail: Part 1

Mount Hood looks stunning from up here on Table Mountain. I was informed by a frankly terrified-looking day hiker that black bears were seen up here last night. I’m proceeding with caution and will update you if I encounter them. 🐻🗻☀️

    Wilson River Trail: Part 1

    I had an amazing weekend, I’m so happy spring is finally here. It’s so freeing to carry everything you need on your back and be completely surrounded by nature. I feel so much safer alone in the middle of the forest than camping along forest roads. I’m considering this spring training while the Cascades are still covered in snow. This trail is ideal for that.

    Wilson River Trail rounds a corner over a small creek crossing. Green ferns and light green moss covered rocks along the sides of the trail.
    A light fog blankets the forest along the North Fork Wilson River near the Diamond Hill OHRV park. Thin trees line the banks of the river.
    White and yellow backpacking tent is pitched along an abandoned forest road and trail. A peaceful location about a half mile off of the Wilson River Trail that gets few visitors. Tall trees and green ferns fill the forest.
