Anti-social anarcho-syndicalist slacker, maker, and code monkey. Soldering irons to semicolons and everything in between.

My preferred pronoun is "motherfucker". Not that I expect you to use it... ('he'/'they'/maybe even 'it' if embodying the instance...but you're gonna just use @admin anyway right??)

For months the Biden administration has insisted there's little it can do to impact Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. The events of the last 24 hours have shown that this is a lie.

It looks like YouTube is closed off again for people (like me) using ad blockers. And I can't find a single Invidious instance that's still working either. Just error codes everywhere, as if YT is killing them.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any known solutions?

admin ,
@admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com avatar

@breadandcircuses I only ever use it through the website, using Firefox with PrivacyBadger and Decentraleyes plugins and I do most of my ad blocking at the network level, but that always works fine for me and hasn't shown an ad in years...

During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden implored us all to “be honest, the threat remains, and democracy must be defended.” Republicans are prepared to play offense — to put the fate of our democracy on the docket.

So am I.

@marcelias it'd be great if the DNC would follow his advice. Nothin honest about Democrats handing millions of dollars to MAGA Republicans to promote Trump's messaging...

The real threat to democracy is people treating politics like a football game, thinking the only thing that matters is whose team wins the game...

I keep seeing these discussions in left circles about how terrible social media is. It angers & frustrates me that Mastodon & the Fediverse don't even merit a mention.

"The Majority Report" goes as far as dissing Threads but never mentions the fedi.

There are only 170 comments. Why not leave a comment asking why "the left" keeps complaining (rightly) about corporate social media but ignoring the alternative?

@futurebird @secretsloth I think it's more than just addiction. It's convenience/laziness (although kinda two sides of the same coin). The traditional social sites work a bit like the old broadcast TV -- it just feeds you stuff and your choices are to either keep watching or change the channel. Very low effort.

You come home from work, exhasted from spending all day trying to justify your right to even exist in this capitalist hellscape, you just want to zone out and passively consume. And Mastodon, at least when someone first joins, does not facilitate that.

...huh....perhaps if someone just took a few of the widely available "lists of people to follow" and slapped a Tinder-style interface over it so it shows you some posts and you can swipe right to follow... xD

Yes, I take it personally when you say you won't vote, or vote for the Dem. Why? Because among other things, the fascists tried to commit a Black GENOCIDE during the pandemic. Your actions or inaction will give them the power to do it again in some other way. My survival depends on them NOT gaining power. So does yours.

admin ,
@admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com avatar

@StillIRise1963 Popular vote doesn't matter though. No matter who I vote for, the Dems will win my state by a significant margin and they will get the same number of electoral votes out of it. It was 60-39 for Biden last time. If I have any possible hope of pushing back against their fascist tendencies by voting for someone else I'm gonna take it.

admin ,
@admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com avatar

@StillIRise1963 Saying that people need to eagerly line up to register their loyalty to the guy sending bombs to be used on toddlers who apparently deserve to die just because they were born in the wrong village seems a lot more racist to me.

Like if my vote had any possibility of handing Trump a victory I might agree with you, but all I'd be doing by voting for Biden would be a show of support for fucking genocide. That's it. And I refuse for that to be my statement.

admin ,
@admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com avatar

@nuevamexicana So explain to me how my one vote in RI is going to be the deciding factor there. Because I am fuckin sick of the people accusing me of being in league with the fascists while never once presenting an argument more advanced than 'shut up and fall in line'.

Right now the mainstream choices are fascism today vs fascism tomorrow. Genocide at home vs genocide abroad. We need to stop lying down and accepting that as the only possible options if we're ever gonna improve our society.

I'm fasting for every Thursday until

Since last Thursday

  • Israelis have made Nasser hospital inoperable
  • Israeli/US bombs massacre hundreds of civilians in Rafah, the last refuge in Gaza
  • Biden vetos a security council resolution for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all
  • Smotrich (Israeli finance minister) says is not important
  • Israel does not allow aid to enter and the UN has given up on North Gaza aid

Lesson of the day: Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath, put your phone down, and remind yourself that you simply cannot win on social media.

    Lots of Fediverse Admins are making it VERY clear they have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the protocol works and that's VERY worrying....

    If you don't even understand how something works, how can you even begin to admin an instance properly?

    There's definitely a legitimate reason to defederate from the BlueSky bridge. You may not trust corporations and that's PERFECTLY FINE!

    But don't disguise it as some sort "opt-in only stance" because if you're a legit Fediverse admin, you know the Fediverse as a whole is opt-out by design.

    Either you know that and are misrepresenting the truth to dogpile on a dev unnecessarily or you don't know that and running an instance is irresponsible of you.....😬yikes...

    admin ,
    @admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com avatar

    @BeAware I dunno what software you're running, but Mastodon at least can be easily configured for opt-out OR opt-in as far as federation is concerned. It is true that much of the network is currently opt-out, but that is for social reasons more than technical ones, and it's something that a lot of people would like to change.

    So yes, today we are all currently forced to adopt opt-out servers if we want much federation...but arguing that it is that way now therefore it must stay that way eternally is just silly. Some people want to move things in a different direction. That's cool. In fact, that's why we're ALL here, isn't it? If you don't want to move social media in a different direction then stay on Twitter or Meta...
