Lemmy: I don't know, but I wouldn't trust any bike helmet that I can't compile myself from source. It's best to just stay home behind (real) firewalls so the Big Bike doesn't target you for your striped Linux socks.

TIL Soviet cosmonauts carried a shotgun on space missions ( en.wikipedia.org )

It was purportedly (and probably in actuality) intended as a survival aid to be used after landings and before recovery in the Siberian wilderness, although allegedly was intended as a defensive weapon against in-space attacks by the US space program.

The attack in space angle was probably just to convince some manager.

The survival in Siberia is completely valid. US retrieves their astronauts in the ocean, but Soviet Russia didn't/doesn't have such a worldwide navy, so Siberia it is. It could take days for the cosmonauts to be recovered, so it was expected they might need to defend themselves against wildlife or even hunt.

I wish people would write some descriptions for their communities

I often browse /all, come across a post that looks interesting but I have no clue what's it about, so I check the sidebar - and all I find is "An unofficial Lemmy community for X", " A place to discuss everything about X", or the best kind, "A continuation of r/X from Reddit"....

I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

To my knowledge there's no stagnant water on my property, I've run water through all my ptraps, and I'm careful to not leave doors open. Yet at any given time there's at least 3 in my house. I can't sleep, i can't sit on the couch, i can't exist in the fear of being sucked dry....

The biggest c/gaming was on beehaw, but that's defederated. Maybe nobody else wanted to do it again and just stuck to smalller communities based on particular systems.

Ugh. I get the concern in scenarios like this, but in the last couple of days every instance has calls to defederate from this or that. Eventually it's just gonna be small islands of "very compatible" instances.

Well, guess it's back to making separate accounts for everything!

Well, Beehaw already defederated from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, a few fairly normal instances don't federate with lemmy.ml, even more don't federate with lemmigrad, calls to defed from lemmynsfw were there from its very first day, never mind burggit.

Like, okay I get it that it's not a drop-in Reddit replacement and instance owners can do whatever they like - but I still wonder where it leads at the end.

Well, maybe. I'm just skeptical and feel that people have more of a tendency to isolate their islands rather than connect.

And once the disconnect happens, it's difficult to reverse.

Maybe I'm wrong. Guess we'll see.

On the other hand, there's the advantage that if one finds "their own" instance, they are free to speak out their mind, while in the big melting pot there's always a risk of offending somebody by just being a little edgy. Whether that's actually a good thing...
