I mean, Calvin has a point. Even if the road was completely clear, you'd still have to stop at traffic lights and stop signs. 50 miles is quite a ways too. It's not realistic to assume they'd be able to maintain that speed for the entire duration. That question is pretty bogus all around, haha!

giant hogweed

Yikes! That's the stuff that can burn your skin and potentially make you go blind, right?

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, when I first learned that, I decided that I'll stay far away from it if I ever see one. Afaik it can't hurt you unless its sap touches you, but I'm not taking chances if I don't have to

That's a little presumptuous

I want to find a morel for the first time this year, so I'm pretty excited for that! We'll see if I actually do or not.

I also want to try making some recipes with stinging nettle. Like make some nettle fettuccine or nettle soup. It's a common plant that I've been successful at identifying in the past, but all I've done with it is make tea so far, so I want to take it to the next level.

Also excited for pawpaws. I tried one for the first time last year at the Ohio State Pawpaw fest, but it would be cool to find one growing in the wild.

Oh yeah! I've used it before but not for a long time. I'll have to check it out again

Almost seems like you need to just selectively plant trees from separate groves next to that of others. At that point it moves from foraging into more of a horticultural territory though, haha!

It's amazing what they do with corrugated cardboard these days

Idk why this comment is so funny to me. This is totally something I would have glossed over as a kid, but reading it now, the specificity of it just cracks me up! "Corrugated cardboard"

I played a knock-off flash game called "Balloon Duel" as a kid. It was pretty fun, so I just decided to buy Balloon Fight to try it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I apologize for being pedantic, but he's not running Linux on the NES, since LUnix is not Linux. This is still a cool project, but the title is a bit misleading.

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but then why still put "Linux running on an NES?" as the title? It's just click bait

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

That's fair. This was more of a complaint about the video than the post. I do still think it's a cool project, just annoyed by the click bait

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

He probably could have just said Unix instead of Linux. I get why he didn't, and it's not that big of a deal, just slightly annoying

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

That's fair

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

That'd be cool too!

That's cool-looking! Not typically what I picture when I think of Canada, so it's interesting to see some new sides of the country

How different is Gentoo's new binary package system, compared to Arch Linux?

It was announced late last year that Gentoo is now offering binary versions of their packages. I’ve always had an interest in Gentoo, but the need to compile everything has always turned me away from it. I run Arch because it gives me the sense that I have more control of my system, when compared to other distros like Ubuntu,...

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

This question doesn't make much sense to me. What is a "system update"? Isn't that just updating all of your packages at once?

I would think syncing the repos and emerging the @world set would be considered a system update. But I guess that is a bit different from how most distros do it.

Grades aren't supposed to be a way to encourage growth, it's just a way to measure it. Whether it does a good job at that is another question, but I definitely agree that of schools focus on them too much.

In an ideal world, grades would just be a way to show who needs some extra help with their learning. There are a lot of good teachers that do view them that way, but there are also those who view them as a form of punishment. Almost like a "you're a BAD student so you got a BAD grade" kind of way. I feel like that's more discouraging than anything.

Probably a good move to avoid that altogether in the early grades. Who needs that kind of stress when you're six years old?

Well said. You've obviously put a great deal of thought into this.

Damn Small Linux 2024 ( www.damnsmalllinux.org )

The New DSL 2024 has been reborn as a compact Linux distribution tailored for low-spec x86 computers. It packs a lot of applications into a small package. All the applications are chosen for their functionality, small size, and low dependencies. DSL 2024 also has many text-based applications that make it handy to use in a term...

Since OpenWrt is just Buildroot with networking libraries and a package manager, I would say Buildroot itself would be an even smaller Linux. Whether it's been condemned to eternal torment is another matter entirely, though, lol

One time I took two frozen pizzas, sandwiched them together like that, wrapped them in tinfoil, and cooked them over a campfire like a hobo dinner. It was awesome

Nice! Might be helpful for SBCs with a MIPI camera slot as well

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it's 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you're about to execute... And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

Makes it so when you install packages with pip, it will only work if it's using a virtual environment. This keeps any installed packages separate from ones your system uses.

If you want to learn about python virtual environments, check this out.
