@pluralistic spreading some truth in The Bezzle:

America will never make life better for the millions of souls it has imprisoned. Never. It is not in our character. To be an American is to live with the festering background knowledge that you are in a land that imprisons more of its people than any country in the history of the world—a land with more prisoners than Stalin’s USSR or Hu Jintao’s China or P. W. Botha’s Apartheid South Africa.

With so many in prison, either you have to believe that you are living in the midst of a great many secret criminals, or you have to confront the fact that you live in a place where the only thing standing between you and decades in a prison (running at two or three times its nominal capacity) is luck … and connections.

I've got the Apocalypse Blues, people. I've got enough dystopia in my everyday life, why do I need to keep watching stories of a worse dystopia?

I really wonder what society would look like if people weren't forced to do jobs they hate just in order to live.

The fact that a capitalist system makes money by denying people the basic necesssities of life and then lays the blame for not being able to live at the feet of the people that the system has screwed is despicable.

Capitalism profits the most on the misery that the capitalist system itself creates. The fact that "work" is seen as both an ideal state of being as well as an "incentive" to get the basic necessities of life is reprehensible. Forcing people to start work as young as possible and then work until they've been completely used up through decades of constant work like so many cogs is abhorrent.

And the capitalists who perpetuate this system have likely never been anything less than affluent their entire lives. The irony is that their accumulated wealth allows them to be more of a "freeloader" than any person without a job. They have transferred their "work" to their money and the only "work" they do is to say, "put this much here".

Capitalism is a lie. It is the ultimate ponzi scheme. It is a system of control by which the wealthy control the rest of us. Capitalism devalues humanity to the point of insignificance.

I hate it here.

Looks like Mastodon's experimental branch is trying stuff out with how you create posts:

-Unlisted post visibility has been renamed to "Quiet Public"
-Mentions/DMs is renamed to "Specific People"
-Polls have visible control for switching from one answer to multiple answers
-Content Warning title bar has been tweaked
-Visibility and language menus more prominent
-Tweaked artwork

Screenshots attached, people on servers running the experimental branch will already be seeing this in action.

@FediTips TBH, I find these new visibility names and descriptions to be more confusing than the old ones were, which were also fairly confusing. For instance, replacing "only" with "everyone" in the "Specific People" option makes it less clear that this is, essentially, a DM. It's also weird that they'd say "less algorithmic fanfare" when there's no algorithm here....

Not that you have anything to do with this or can do anything about it, but I'm not a fan of the new options.

@FediTips @kaveinthran also, it can be good to have alternate accounts in the event that the instance you're on happens to go down or away for any length of time, kind of like a "backup account".

@kaveinthran @FediTips

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you wanting to keep two accounts on two different instances synchronized? If that's what you're asking, then there's not an easy or straightforward method for doing that of which I am aware.

The best I could suggest would be to periodically export your follows/followers lists from each account and import them into the other account, but that will result in new follow requests being generated from the other account if the person you're following doesn't automatically approve follows.

You can follow an alt account from your main and vice versa, and then boost the alternate from your current one, I guess.

But for all intents and purposes, they are two separate accounts and will have to be managed as such by you.

@ChasMusic @FediTips I stand corrected! Thanks for the tip! 👍

My mission to acquire the Winter quarterly was finally successful! Huzzah! And, it also makes me question Barnes & Noble's organizational strategies.

A chronology of my attempts:

  • Attempt 1 (on or about Jan 4):
    • B&N near my house (B&N[close]): no copies of (not even the fall quarterly) and no apparent space in the rack
    • B&N 7 miles away (B&N'): only copies of fall quarterly
  • Attempt 2 (on or about Jan 8):
    • B&N[close]: didn't try because no copies in attempt 1
    • B&N': still only the fall quarterly
  • Attempt 3 (today):
    • B&N': Winter quarterly acqusition success! Tried to get @pluralistic's Chokepoint Capitalism, was told they didn't have it but B&N[close] had 2 copies (grrrrrrrr!)
    • B&N[close]: acquired Chokepoint Capitalism and also discovered Winter quarterly on the magazine rack (grrrrrrr!)

It would seem that I no longer understand how giant chain Mega-Lo-Mart bookstores work (or don't, as the case may be). :confusedlucy:
