We watched THE INNOCENTS (2021) last night and while I thought it was a solid horror film, I am somewhat bewildered at the 97% on RT. I'd give it a 90% - it was a unique premise, certainly full of horror, and the kids were great in it. But it wasn't a near masterpiece.

(Note that the horror contains some truly appalling animal death, so don't watch it if that's going to traumatize you.)

I had a message yesterday from a friend who rescued 26 battery hens. They live in her barn most of the time but are allowed to go where they want.

The message read 'The girls are laying again, how many eggs do you want?

The girls lay an egg most days and are swapped for feed money.

So I'll be picking up a couple of dozen later. Back to baking, omelette and fritatta.

I'm starting to rethink my commitment to being detached from philosophical views, treating them as things to entertain and play with without paying heed to them being mine, now that AI is so prevalent. Maybe we should be attached and value individuals and their original ideas because they're a form of creative and personal expression.

(Also, can you tell that I've been thinking about the ethics of AI a lot recently? 😄)

It should only be an emotional injury to writers that seek to produce works "by the numbers". Those that mimic the current trends and produce what amount to knock-offs of hundreds of other works in the same genre.

In short, some 90% of writers.

, anyone? Perfect example from publishing. A publisher is using AI to write crappy nonfiction, then assigning author names that almost match leading experts in that field (to trick search engines). No doubt other AIs will now search those texts as authoritative. This is done solely to make money and only makes the world a worse place.

Got called a fascist by a Biden supporter for..... saying I support Biden?

Lesson of the day: Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath, put your phone down, and remind yourself that you simply cannot win on social media.

    "When I hear them say Joe Biden is too old, I can hear them really saying they want a world where America has abandoned international leadership and the rule of law to accelerate strongman rule with Donald Trump as the all-powerful boss deciding our fate."

    S. Beschloss is hearing correctly. This is exactly what the media mavens, the New York Times and the corporate elites that pull media strings, are saying.

    Mine is EVERYONE ON THE MOON IS ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL, by Julian K. Jarboe, which I have not yet read, followed closely by THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACESUITS, by Ali Thompson, which I have read.

    It has always been my dream to create a page-a-day desk calendar for Low Quality Facts. Because who wouldn't want to start off their day with one of these bad boys? It just seems like a perfect fit. The only problem is that I, a humble fact writer, have no idea how to make a calendar.

    Please boost so some publishing company bigwig sees this and helps make the 2025 Low Quality Facts calendar a reality.

    Folks remembering today - remember that he was moving publicly-funded research out from behind a paywall.

    Then remember the only reason the case went forward is because federal prosecutors, specifically Carmen Ortiz and Stephen Heymann, wanted to make an example of him.

    “Theft is theft, and it doesn’t matter if you use a crowbar or a computer” were Heymann’s words at the time.

    Notice how federal prosecutors aren’t bullying Sam Altman for the wholesale theft of content network-wide, to build a machine that spews bullshit and further destroys our ability to determine the truth?

    It’s because he’s doing it for private profit, while Aaron worked for the public good.

    Now suppose that you work hard to write a novel. Really pour your heart and soul into it. Then someone makes a copy and starts selling it with their name on it.

    SnerkRabbledauber ,
    @SnerkRabbledauber@mas.to avatar

    @clacke @TheSecondVariation @enron @appassionato

    And plagiarism is how theft in idea space works. If you copy something, the copy is still there. It is still available. But when someone reads your copy they no longer need to read the original. So if you charge them to read it, then you have, in a sense, stolen potential income from the original author. It would be a similar model for infringing on patents.

    So that is how theft in idea space works.

    It still takes people to make a blockbuster movie. Currently, at least, it is still many people's creation.

    For me, once it is a blockbuster then I consider all the profits just going to marketers, etc. So I don't get upset if people get free copies.
