turning a big dial taht says AI on it and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on the price is right.

I don’t buy the theory that psilocybin somehow caused human civilization to develop. My issues:

  1. How could something used only by a few even today have such a big impact?
  2. Some people find themselves in altered states naturally; why are the mushrooms needed?
  3. is this solving a “problem” that doesn’t exist? It’s not mysterious it took time for complex societies to form. Life is hard, full of set backs. Couldn’t it be for once the weather was nice & not everyone got eaten by bears?

The "Local" timeline on your server shows all the latest public posts by people on your server. On Mastodon's web interface click 🌎 "Live Feeds" and select the "This server" tab.

You can also browse the Local timeline of most other servers, which can be very interesting if they're a themed server or well-run general server. Some apps also let you follow the Local timelines of other servers.

There's more info about all of this on the updated article at:

@FediTips
Would anyone say that has de-emphasised the Local TL?

For me, it's the main feature, esp if one joins a themed instance.

Image: a shot of the "health/ damage" section of the system Burning Wheel. Each column is different levels of damage you can take. :ablobflushed: I thought the Savage World health/damg system was extra.

I know some ppl might like this. Feel it is "more realistic to real combat". But its designs like these that A) get-on-my-nerves, and B) bring to mind the quote "Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill."

@SJohnRoss I could see this being a potentially good, interesting videogame mechanic.

Burning Wheel uses a mutli d6 roll mechanic. Which I usually hate. But we are using a virtual table, so that counts the dice for me, and now Im fine with it.

If this health/damg system was in a computer game, I might not bat an eye. But no, the devs are asking my brain meats to handle it each turn, each session.

For however clever it is, i think it has oversight of interest, patence, & accessability.

RSS fans!

  • You can follow Mastodon accounts on RSS by adding ".rss" to the end of a Mastodon profile's web address.

  • You can follow RSS feeds on Mastodon by using the RSS Parrot service (https://rss-parrot.net) which turns feeds into Fediverse accounts.

  • PeerTube accounts have RSS options on their follow button, and can be followed from podcast apps.

  • Friendica has particularly advanced RSS features.

In case you missed it, you can use Mastodon's "Lists" feature to create themed mini-timelines with accounts you select. You can then hide these accounts from your main timeline if you want, so that it isn't so crowded.

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon

...and if you're on a computer, you can combine Lists with the "Advanced Web Interface" mode to have lots of themed timelines on a single screen:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mastodons-tweetdeck-style-advanced-web-interface/

You can pin as many Lists as you want, and also hashtags etc.

@lowqualityfacts I feel like there are philosophical implications to this.

I have gushed about before. But it really is important in my life. It gave -me- permission to be weird. And looking back, it was all the oddballs that made it that helped w/ that. The fact that they all got together and made something so odd, showed smaller-me that oddness was out there, and doing things. Paying bills with oddness. Making art with weirdness. That life-while-weird can be done, & to great effect.

It helped me be that part of myself. And I love my life with that in it.

Things people say, nod and agree with, but did we really think about that?

"Short form video content is bad it makes for short attention spans."

Been hearing this a lot with reference to tiktok. But, it's been around since I was a kid. (MTV is bad, see MaxHeadroom satirizing this through blipverts)

OK, the way that tiktok can induce slack-jawed zoned out infi-scrolling seems "bad" because that seems like manipulation.

But short form content? Is it really bad?

Scofisticated ,
@Scofisticated@socel.net avatar

@futurebird I dont want to broad brush all short-vids. I watch the vids by @alliterative about language development and hist, and I love these. Short, not quick, to the point. So I think it can be done well.

But i dont like how some of the shortvids on bigbox sites dont give you time to digest. Or just raw stimulation. And then it immediately repeats giving less time to think or be critical. -That- I dont like.

tip: Write out a loose outline of scenes even if you know they could go off track.

Scofisticated ,
@Scofisticated@socel.net avatar

@slyflourish I am finding I need to do this to keep me on track. I am getting distracted making one off characters that are fun for me to act out, and amuse some players. But is not helping the story much.
