Some Democrats try to talk about immigration and appeal to both those who see immigration as a negative and those who see it as a positive and NOT articulate a vision for how it ought to work.

They talk "immigration crisis" in a vague way meant to stand in for both a (fake false racist) perception that there is an "invasion" AND a system disorganized and cruel.

Because they don't articulate a vision the bigotry gets no push back. Which is what I want from their leadership MOST on this issue.

Who wants a recursive headache?
One of my very bright students is writing a program to evaluate the total resistance in a network of resistors. She came up with these nested lists to represent the network. The top level is in series and it alternates series and parallel as you go deeper.
[r1, [r2, r3],[[r4, r5,],r6],r7]
That’s r1 + 1/[1/r2+ 1/r3]+ 1/[1/(r4+r5) + 1/r6] + r7
Or
s(r1, p(r2,r3), p(s(r4, r5), r6), r7)
So this ought to be a piece of cake to parse recursively right? right??

Democrats seem to think they've "won" on the "border issue" because they've offered a plan to Republicans and predictably Republicans don't want to do anything (including things they claimed they wanted to do very badly not that long ago)

But, other than making liberals feel smug I don't think this matters because the only way Democrats can "win" on this issue with the people who care about it is by adopting Republican bigoted messaging about the border.

And then I might not vote for them.

Can someone who has more faith than I in "the market finding the most efficient solution" please poke some holes in what I'm calling The Inoperability Crisis?

The Inoperability Crisis is the tendency for firms producing software to have a great incentive to make their software work with their own, sometimes inferior, versions of software, rather than participating or contributing to universal standards.

It's the software version of one hundred dozen different USB connectors.

@futurebird I don't have ANY faith that the narkets will ever solve anything except make rich people richer, but what do you mean by different softwarr for USB connectors? Do you mean for USB Thumb Drives? USB2 is a standard which most things (including weird linux distros) seem to follow and USB2 devices for me "just seem to work."

@venya That's a huge problem. Plus the fact that for decades and decades they've been treated as a privileged class that can just get away with killing people. That has changed a little bit but it needs to change dramatically.

My European friends ask me why there are crimes with special punishments if you hurt or kill a cop. They're confused and tell me "they're just regular people, don't the regular laws apply?"

Yeah, we kinda deify cops here.

I'm working on hooking up a microphone system to my carpenter ant colony ... I expect to hear mostly chewing sounds, but part of me has a vision of tuning in the microphone (super sensitive modified guitar pickup) these tiny squeaky voices:

@futurebird guitar pickups are magnets that have metal strings vibrate in front of them to create sound. I'm not sure they'd be good for regular vibrations like regular microphones pick up.

@futurebird Ohhh, so are you using those? Those are transducers for acoustic guitars. I was thinking of electric guitar pickups. My bad.
