Blocked @ghostie. You might like to preemptively do so too.

“It's a great time to be a cop [in NSW],” apparently. In this photo a young female officer notices the camera and shows a semi-smile, hoping the male officer on the left sees it too and doesn’t choose this moment to taser to death the nice old man on the right. Because you know he wants to.

@vampiress @stilgherrian For a long time my ACAB mantra is that there are no good cops because every cop is either violently corrupt or knows someone who’s violently corrupt without doing anything about it, and any normal person would resign in disgust to get away from it all.

    (Works for sociopathic politicians too)

If that’s what your friend’s girlfriend did, I’m going to feel a bit validated right there.

@vampiress What happens to a Mac SE if you don’t snip out the CMOS battery?

@vampiress I’m reminded of SPARCstation IPCs, which have a button-cell to keep the NVRAM in a NV state, and when it goes flat the Ethernet MAC address defaults to 00:00:00:00:00:00 and you need to enter some Forth code from the boot prompt to set it to a sensible value.

A reminder that if I see you boost DenisTheCOVIDInfoGuy into my timeline I'll unfollow you immediately, and if you boost anyone from zeroes.ca I'll straight-up block you.

In both cases I'll also judge you, and while I'm doing it I'll be mouthing, "Get bent."

@trent @vampiress I once had a housemate whose hobby was collecting old Unix computers, and we had an 11/780 in the kitchen.

His pride and joy was a Multimax 310, which was a 1980s supercomputer designed to support hundreds or perhaps thousands of users. His had 8 CPUs and about a gigabyte of RAM, which was not quite fully loaded but pretty close.

The Multimax corporation designed the Annex terminal servers as a way of getting lots of users onto a machine that only had four serial ports. The Annex product was divested to Encore, which sold it to pretty much every Uni in Australia in the late 1980s. If your Uni had Sun or DEC compute resources, you probably accessed them on an RS-232 terminal connected to an Annex.

(We had several in the house for incoming modem lines)

@vampiress @jpm @trent NetBSD will run on it with a reasonably modern compiler toolchain (I think they switched to LLVM)

    Speaking as a higher earner:

    Bullshit.

If you’re a higher earner and you can’t afford essentials: Sell one of your Audis. Shut the fuck up, you’re an embarrassment.

@vampiress We had MacintoshPlus computers at school. There was a system extension called MacSpew that caused it to make a wet sloppy sounding vomiting noise whenever it ejected a floppy disk, and I made a point of putting it in every System folder I could find.

@trent @vampiress Did you do the trick where you could double the amount of chip RAM by soldering chips piggy-back onto the existing ones, with the CS pin pulled out sideways and wired to one of the address bus pins on the Fat Agnes? That hack was the mark of the true Amiga aficionado.
