I’m reading a book on Thebes, and in the chapter on religion I was struck by how weird d&d is. It treats a polytheistic world in a monotheistic way.

And while it’s true that high priests of a specific cult would be focused on one god, for most people you would sacrifice or worship different gods at different times, depending on your needs at the time.

@deinol The difficulty comes from not understanding the transactional nature of the worship. It helps by making the bargaining and appeasement more obvious and situational.

The latest episode of the is all about Adapting Someone Else's Sandbox, where @ayvalentine and @boymonster discuss the challenges and triumphs of producing licensed RPGs! https://genesisoflegend.podbean.com/e/episode-371-adapting-someone-elses-sandbox/

@genesisoflegend @621393 Loved the content. Highlighted a few things about licensing that didn't even occur to me. I'm hoping someone legalwise figures out a way to help designers keep out of license products available in some form.

Pity about the audio quality. I wonder if running it through Adobe Podcast would help with the whooshes? (https://podcast.adobe.com/enhance)

I have finished reading God Emperor of Dune. It ended exactly as it must, but I’m still not certain what to think of it. So far it’s my least favorite book, mostly because of the homophobia.

My recommendation is to probably stop at book 2 or 3.

But I shall forge ahead anyway.

@deinol Messiah, Children and God Emperor were my least favourite. Heretics and Chapterhouse are very different books, but re-ignited my flame. Given the time-lapsed, it worked for me. I know many disagree. I do appreciate God Emperor for the gaming possibilities compared to the others.

I love Jason Momoa, but he is miscast. Every screen Duncan has been. Viewing the #Dune universe told through the eyes of Duncan is the gamer gold. Make all the PCS gholas and kill them regularly with impunity.

@deinol Not really. The game, like Deciphers' Chronicles of Dune, focuses more on the tribulations of finding success within CHOAM within the Imperium. You could as long as you keep it about the tribulations of a House or such group. Dropping that aspect is akin to stripping Strongholds from Forbidden Lands. Probably okay for shorter games mechanically, but I am tempted to use the attribute array from a different 2d20 game instead.

@deinol That said, they were thorough with covering every era with Star Trek Adventures, so I wouldn't put it past them, given time. The Corebook and "Sand and Dust" book (Arrakis sourcebook) mention eras from Butlerian Jihad until the Age of the Enemy. (Butlerian Jihad, Reconstruction, Imperium, Ascension of Muad'dib, God Emperor, Scattering, Age of the Enemy). The focus is Imperium. In S&B they unlock being Freman and building a Sietch. I'm guessing Bene Gessirit will be even better.

@deinol I share that pain. I'm itching to try a Freman insurgency against the Harkonnen scenario. Perhaps they're more likely to bite if they can be the Harkonnens.

@Scio @Nariom Modiphius put out very good products. Star Trek Adventures is the best Star Trek rpg created. 2d20 mechanic is flexible. Momentum is marmite, I happen to love it, but metacurrency is a mindset. Infinity is 2d20 with the crunch dialled up. Dishonored blew my mind where they jiggle it so that intent is stats.

All aside, they do licences thoroughly and wth respect. GURPS Discworld plays it straight. A One In A Million Chance At Adventure goes Noir Mystery. They're testing their take.

It would be lovely to see some wildlife recovery and elk to populate the Midwest again.

@chgowiz @Tesqovara One of the reasons South Africa has such abundant wildlife is that hunting was turned into a sustainable industry. The money generated means vast tracts of wilderness exist. Game farmers have an interest in keeping herds healthy and safe and participate in maintaining genetic and biodiversity out of their own pocket. Perififary species now also flourish. Locally, hunters have done more to preserve species than anyone else.
I don't hunt, but credit where credit is due.

@chgowiz @Tesqovara I can't speak on those laws, but it can't be the sole domain of agencies. Conservation is only effective when local communities have a stake and businesses that support the goals are viable in the face of pressure from development, mining, and poaching. For example, rhinos and elephants would be extinct in the wild if not for the efforts of the private sector.

I can honestly say that the movie "Saltburn" violated about almost every rule and limit I have for movies. Not all of them, but it came pretty damn close. That was... one messed up movie!

@chgowiz Reminded me of Withnail & I, perhaps because it too had Grant.
