In Czech we call it "vrtulník" (propeller thing), which I find kinda hilarious now that I think about it.

LANIK2000 ,

Idk, what to tell you, but every cat we had without fail fucking loved milk. Now I read online that you shouldn't feed too much of it to them (especially not daily), but I assure you, our cats eat anything as long as there's milk in it, even pills that they won't consume any other way, they'll slurp up like candy if they're dissolved in a big ol soup spoon or tiny bowl of milk.

A bit unrelated, but where I live the price of car school doubled in the past few years. It's the reason my girlfriend still hasn't started driving school yet. I could see that as an important factor. If I had to get my driving license for the current price, I might also reconsider. Cars are generally ludicrously expensive compared to everything else. Here you could pay roughly (converted) 120 bucks a year for public transit, or pay 80 monthly AT LEAST to drive (just gass and ensurance).

LANIK2000 ,

Ey! I studied there for 2 years, awesome corner of the world :)

200/month that's 2400/year, now to me that sounds insane... That's twice my car expenses and even that's like double of what I pay for transit and food.

Here in Prague a yearly public transit ticket is 3650kč which is actually closer to 160$ (my bad) or roughly 150€ a year. Either way it's an order of magnitude less and then some. The kind of money I'll happily just throw out there. And inside Prague it is most definitely faster than by car. I dread driving here.

In rural areas the story is a little different, 9385kč (~380€) a year including Prague and the surrounding area, so I can visit my ma. I used to have this pass before my car. Still MUCH cheaper, but I admit, it's like twice as slow to go by rural busses compared to driving your own car.

Sadly don't know the transit pass prices in the Netherlands, cus I just biked everywhere (didn't have a car as a student and sure as hell wasn't gonna pay more than I had to at the time). But it's hard to imagine they'd be much more expensive.

LANIK2000 ,

Nation wide?
Fuck yea! :D

I was gonna say something about scientific definitions not being too useful and that you would need to deny that orange and purple are colors, while claiming that WIFI is, but then I actually looked it up and I can't find a definition that doesn't include "lightness" in the equation, aka, black and white (and orange too). Literally can only find an Adobe article claiming this and then countless online discussions.

2013, a yes, rampant school bullying and disappointed family. Nah fam, angry birds and bad piggies weren't better than my current life. My family at least acknowledges that I'm a functioning adult now and all the school assholes are working minimum wage/are ruined drug addicts, because they don't realize that being a massive piece of shit is awarded only in school and not in real life. I have a lot more freedom now than ever. The fact that I now understand that the world is on fire is a lot better than thinking my world is over before it began and never should.

LANIK2000 ,

Let's just ignore the literal fascist government take over and mass deportation (to Africa??? Who the fuck will pay for that??? Cus the world's poorest countries sure as hell won't!).

But like, his great strategy to fix the US economy is to FUCKING SANCTION IT SELF?!? Oh yea! Let's show China! They'll be in real hot water once NOBODY IS DOING BUSINESS WITH THE US, BUT IS FORCED TO CHOSE SOMEONE ELSE!!! And then he wants to overspend on excessive policing, great mix.

Can't wait for the day when colorized pictures become the norm and more people realize that 100 years wasn't that long ago and that the main difference is the speed of communication, the quality of the medical system, the fact that rural areas have the quality of life city folk have and the fashion. Ofc some social issues have advanced considerably, but it's roughly still the same themes and topics.

LANIK2000 ,

Are you a doctor in some rural ditch that really likes fashion or something? Otherwise I don't see how that's "everything". The daily life of your average western person wasn't too different in the 1920s, nor were their political opinions. The main point I wanted to make is that we still generally talk and care about the same issues. If we weren't addicted to scrolling social media and were esthetically blind, most of us wouldn't immediately realize it if we were transported back in time.

LANIK2000 ,

Oh right, forgot about America... Imagine bulldozing your entire city just so you can live the American dream of driving for basic necessities.

Also I don't watch TV or listen to radio. Many people don't. I generally don't buy frozen goods either, I can just grab anything I want fresh from the store, it's literally down the street (Or have it delivered, like what my gf does, tho that's definitely a modern luxury). I usually just grab some meat and cream on my way from work.

My daily lifestyle outside of work as a developer doesn't differ too much from my great grandparents.

LANIK2000 ,

Mmhm, alcohol makes any dumb activity fun, and any person interesting, to you that is, the drunk. It's the reason why I still occasionally drink, but only at weddings and what not, as not attending would cause more issues than just drinking once.

LANIK2000 ,

Yep, not arguing there. Alcohol sucks and I only use it when I have the pleasure of experiencing a social event I didn't wanna attend.

LANIK2000 ,

Feels like they don't even have a thing against reproduction. As time goes on, it's harder and harder to not be convinced that they just get off on taking right away period.

LANIK2000 ,

Seems rather wasteful at first glance, I can't imagine the 100 and 1000 digits changing too often. Do we know what they usually counted with it?

LANIK2000 ,

Imagine building your war strategy around the fact that an arbitrary limitation by your enemy won't change if exploited to all hell.

LANIK2000 ,

I'm all for the Palestinian people getting their freedom and lives back and stopping the Israeli government dead in its tracks if not replacing it, but I'm not going to pretend that Hamas is innocent. Just because the Palestinians are victims of the worst crime of this century, doesn't mean the governing body that rules over them with an iron fist is good.

LANIK2000 ,

Twitter and Reddit are low handing fruit, but Lemmy isn't? Lol...

Anyways, yes, I'd be interested in some left-wing magazines that aren't just a tankie/"America bad, Russia good" outlet.
Maybe 3 different sources if you have that many?

LANIK2000 ,

Not disagreeing, just recently found out what semitic actually means and find it both hilarious and very alarming to call arabs "anti-semitic".

LANIK2000 ,

Yes, EXACTLY, that's why I called it "very alarming", because the common meaning is becoming the polar opposite of it's original meaning. Semitic used to refer to the people of the middle east, and now we're changing the meaning to only include Jews (even worse in the context of Israel, where half the bloody population is from Europe). Calling any arab or palestine supporter anti-semitic, is like calling Ukrainians and Ukraine supporters anti-slav. The way it's starting to be used is very aggressive and basically denies the right of the group to identify as their own people.

LANIK2000 ,

Ok wow, actually looked it up... Wtf??? Why does semitic and anti-semitic have a completely different definition? Man fuck this shit... I admit I didn't look into it enough before forming an option, but who the fuck would separately look up "something" and "anti-something"??? Once I found semitic it lead me down the semitic languages and the history and bla bla route, not the btw this word has a different meaning in its negative form. Wikipedia even has a whole section dedicated to just how bullshit this is.

Tho tbh it doesn't really change my feelings about the word. It still comes across as extremely problematic to use. Honestly it just seems like 100x worse now that I know the origin is a literal nazi conspiracy theory that hijacked the word and both versions are floating around today. With this context, calling arabs anti-semitic is calling them literal nazis, which I'd argue is worse than just "anti self existence".

And before I star sounding too dismissive, thanks for the info, twas surprisingly and eye opening.

LANIK2000 ,

This! And 29% of 60% is 17.4%. I'd say there's plenty of room for all the dumb people there. And just for completion, 19.8% for democrats.

LANIK2000 ,

Oh, this is just people that are registered as republicans. Arguably a better metric of actual supporters, rather than just plain votes, as those include a lot of strategic votes from people that don't really like either, but just settle for whatever they think of as the lesser evil. But even using registered people is a bit iffy, because not all necessarily need to like the given candidate, just food for thought.

And since ya asked, here's the same math with votes. The 2020 election final round turnout was 66.6% and 46.8% voted Trump, that means 31.1%. And for Biden, 51.3%, so that would be 34.1%. I'm using Wikipedia's numbers btw.

LANIK2000 ,

Just wanted to say I find it hilarious that both democrats and republicans use the term "liberal" as an insult for the other. It's comedy gold. As a foreigner, it took me ages to understand what that term was supposed to mean because of it, but now, oh man!

But yes, I do agree, this is a low quality joke with little to no substance. Would be better served if it weren't political at least. Some 3 stooges like thing.

LANIK2000 ,

Oh? Every time I heard a leftist say it, they seemed to be describing an ancap strawman. And I've never heard a democrat describe them selves as liberal and never seen a self described liberal even remotely want to associate with democrats.

LANIK2000 ,

I'm still surprised how little attention Nobara gets when it comes to this. It's such a wonderful just works out of the box distro.

LANIK2000 ,

Really now? Wanna become a nanny pimp? Maybe organize a life couch group? Give me a break. All actual service jobs (jobs that don't require renting or owning an office/place of some kind) require specialized equipment or a degree, and you'll be hard pressed to find such a business opportunity without strong competition. Most people can't afford to start a business, nor have the knowhow.

LANIK2000 ,

Lol, I thought this was a joke, then I read the comments.

LANIK2000 ,

I find that a bit misleading. Me and my gf both work only 4 days a week (aka not full-time). I'd say it barely makes a difference in our field when we're tired on Fridays rotting at work or home.

LANIK2000 ,

Oh I see...
In the two countries I worked in it was 40, ok then.

LANIK2000 ,

Not old enough, but if I was, Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray are the only ones I listen to old enough to fit the bill.

LANIK2000 ,

A largely organizational issue, we currently throw out at least 30% of all our food, not to mention we already consume way more than healthy by any metric and we still have much more on the planet to exploit. We live in an unprecedented time of access and yet all 3 super powers are hellbent on preserving poverty like it's their cultural heritage or something. There's absolutely no rational reason Africa shouldn't be among the most prosperous regions, just like there's no rational reason that at least 20% of Russians don't even have running water, let alone warm or drinking water or that America as the richest of em all, still can't provide the most basic needs for its citizens like almost every other country. Nearly all famines and insecurities with few exceptions around the world are 100% man made.

LANIK2000 ,

In my experience they just stop talking to you, as if hoping you'll stop existing or something. I'm the one doing the "best wishes" shit, just to get some closure for my self.

LANIK2000 ,

Lol, our cat gets lots of random raw meat, yogurt, ice cream or really any leftovers, which often enough includes onions in the sauce, anything she doesn't refuse to eat outright and she's still surprisingly healthy at 15 years old.
