What's the silliest apocalypse you can think of?

#TTRPG #Worldbuilding

GreatBigTable ,
@GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

@thoughtpunks Due to a shift in the laws of molecular chemistry brought on by a quantum physics experiment gone wrong, the recipe for marshmallow results in exponential yields.

Factories and home cooks around the sunddenly over produce at such a scale that they swallow the world in gooey confectionary apocalypse.

Anyone know of a printer who prints really shitty, cheap paperbacks?

Not shitty content, but shitty production quality. I want to publish a little, 200-page, 4.25" x 6.875", fit in your back pocket, fold the cover all the way around, buy for the price of a coffee, use to wipe up that coffee when you spill it, kind of book.

Ideally, something you'd throw in the compost when you were done reading it. Or start a campfire with it or make 100 bookmarks for better quality books and magazines.

@epidiah I have a friend who used to work for Data Mail Inc (datamailinc.com) who said they could do almost any kind of printing you could think of. They got their start in direct mail marketing decades ago, but have expanded into a ton of other areas.

Not sure if they could help or not.

Attention folks near Western Massachusetts and interesting in #ttrpg design!

We are having a little Picnic & Game Design next week, Saturday the 29th, starting around 10 AM, in Unity Park in Turners Falls, MA. Weather permitting, of course. Probably look for us along the river's edge. You are invited!

This is an unorganized event. Not a potluck or anything of that sort. So bring any food or drink you may want (there are also cafes and restaurants within walking distance).

@epidiah this sounds like a lot of fun. I hope everyone has a great time.

    I've been concentrating on the job hunt and working on my website lately, which means not a lot is getting done on the designing side of things. But, oof, I feel the draw.

    Had a couple conversations yesterday that touched upon that nostalgia many of us have for when you find a new-to-you game hidden on the shelf of a store that doesn't specifically do games. That wonder that accompanies the unearth of a strange new world. That's the stuff right there.

    GreatBigTable ,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    @epidiah I have deep nostalgia for Walden Books and for the collector doll and dollhouse store owner who had two bookshelves in the back of her store filled with role playing games that were curated by her college-aged grandson.

    I was exposed to so much if my favorite memories from my childhood from the one-two punch of those two places.

    #DnD magic-users cast a spell & forget it. Folks like to point at this and say that makes D&D's magic Vancian.

    This bugs me for many reasons I don't care to enumerate. I encourage you to read some Jack Vance if want to know more. It's all in books.

    While this cast and forget quality is a delightful constraint in Vance's fiction, it's an awkward trope in D&D's pastiche. The latter does not feel like the former. So I'd like to humbly propose a new term for D&D's version: Regexian.

    @epidiah I'm currently kinda hyped about the bi-weekly lunchtime Ironsworn game I roped some colleagues into. I've always wanted to have an office RPG game, but could never generate interest. Finally, it clicked. I think more people got back into it or did it for the first time over the pandemic, so there was more interest.

    This is the first time for all of them playing a non-trad game, though one of them is familiar with PbtA games from some actual plays that he's listened to.

    Now that I have a smart phone and I'm listening to audiobooks during my forced commute days, I'm getting through a lot more books.

    I finished Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. It was excellent overall. I have a few minor quibbles, but I definitely enjoyed listening to it.

    It was more of a character study than a detailed post-apocalypse account. I like the themes about the pursuit & survival of art & the overall hopefulness.

    Hoping to watch the miniseries.

    GreatBigTable OP ,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    I also finished Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch. It's the second book in the Gentleman Bastard series. While they are over-the-top violent at points, I have enjoyed the books. Stories about heists and con men are some of my favorites and these fantasy versions fit the bill well.

    I've had this book for a number of years and stalled out in reading it about midway through. I'm not as interested in pirate stories, I guess.

    GreatBigTable OP ,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    That being said, I think I just needed the right kick in the pants, because the audiobook of Red Seas Under Red Skies -- excellently narrated by Michael Page -- was great.

    I would switch between finishing the physical book and listening in the car for the last half of the story and burned through it.

    I think it is a little heavy in the middle and there is a lot of buildup for how fast the ending comes, but I still enjoyed it overall and I'm looking forward to the next.

    GreatBigTable OP ,
    @GreatBigTable@mastodon.social avatar

    Finally, I just finished @pluralistic's Radicalized novella.

    There is a physical copy floating around the house, but at a little over two hours, I finished it in one commute and a lunch break by listening to the audiobook.

    Radicalized is a kick to the groin. Doctorow does a good job of explaining how radicalization on the Internet works and exposes one -- of many -- cracks in our increasingly tense and tenuous connections in the US that can be broken apart by it.

    @epidiah you might just wait a while before applying the upgrade. Ideally, wait until an update says the keyboard issue is fixed.

    I use Ubuntu LTS releases, but I don't upgrade til there is a MajorRelease.MinorRelease.1 or MR.mr.2 release when most of the implementation quirks have been identified and resolved (or at least worked around).

    It's a much better experience that way.
