Despite the name, Fully Automated! is human made. We proudly make our RPG the old-fashioned way: with a team of nerds banging on keyboards.

I should really tag @adamconover if I link to his stuff. Don't tell him this, but we're planning to ask him for a blurb for our game when it's done.

This episode’s guest is Dr Anne Pasek, Canada Research Chair in Media, Culture, and Environment, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies and the School of the Environment at Trent University. Dr Pasek is co-founder of the Low Carbon Research Methods Group, and she talks to Ariel all about what Low Carbon Research is (and can look like!), the “carbon footprint” of academic research, new innovative ways for research to respond to the climate crisis, the importance of zines, and even hosting her own solar server in her backyard!

This is a solid episode!

Most episodes are good, but this one in particular really clicked for us!

What took a bit for you to truly get but when you did it just clicked? What game or system was difficult at first but then made sense?

Bonus: What helped you understand it? What was the moment when it all made sense?

FullyAutomatedRPG ,
@FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

@thoughtpunks I know this is a totally egocentric answer, but honestly I never clicked with a game system.

I worked on the game we made in some part to make the system that I always wished I could find.

I'm curious what people think of it.

Also, Reverse UNO card: what's your answer?

FullyAutomatedRPG ,
@FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

@thoughtpunks Nice! I'm going to go look that up.

In my earlier days of birding, I had very little idea what I was doing. I met a few people, including a veteran birder named Rod who had seen every LA county rarity for decades. I helped him with bluebird box monitoring and was able to learn a lot about where and how to find birds, including several groups of cactus wrens in a local park. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to help someone in the same way.

It's so sweet and gratifying to participate in interest groups like this, where knowledge and culture are passed along from one person to another in this way.

Since this got boosted I'll add that if any readers of "The Lost Cause" found themselves wanting to go on adventures in that setting (about fifty years later), that's a pretty good summary of the vibe of our tabletop RPG.

    Added the category -adjacent for stories that have elements, but don't quite fit the genre, and ditched the category realism because who am I to judge that.

    Other than that, there's also , and and a generic category, including and general

    @lex I really relate to this.

    I wouldn't want to gatekeep many great off-world solarpunk stories, but I happen to adore stories that take place in real places!

    I love @pluralistic 's "The Lost Cause" for being not only in Burbank, but IN Burbank.

    Not only are real settings more instructive, imo, but they also represent what I consider a facet of solarpunk: knowledge of a place and reverence for the uniqueness of lands.

    It's why we set our stories in real places (principally Los Angeles)!

    When there's a new RPG on the block claiming to do , I'm obviously interested. Recently, @FullyAutomatedRPG made its way to me via @fiction so I'm giving it a look. What does it want to do? It wants to be a kind of D&D for Solarpunk – a big kitchen sink game that becomes a cornerstone for the genre. That's… Hm, I like my RPGs written with a lightning focus on telling specific stories, so I feel like I'll be biased against , but let's see. 1/8

    FullyAutomatedRPG ,
    @FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

    @8petros @alxd @Anaphory @fiction Even if it's not your cup of tea, I really appreciate the examination & discourse!

    First: I think it's key to recognize that this is an OSR game. There are lots of great world building games and solo cozy games, etc, but this is meant to give a certain traditional experience. Mechanics are included where necessary - namely combat and progression - but it assumes the players are a group of friends looking to roleplay, get up to shenanigans, and make memories.

    FullyAutomatedRPG , (edited )
    @FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

    @8petros @alxd @Anaphory @fiction

    2nd, I think checking the solarpunk bonafides is a less productive analysis than asking what use it might serve.

    I think the reimagining of real places like my beloved Los Angeles is a worthwhile contribution to the genre. I think the character creator adds unique guidance for creating PCs that break a lot of RPG molds. And I think the playable adventures offer more substance and style than you might expect.

    Also: it's free. It's very, very accessible.

    FullyAutomatedRPG ,
    @FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

    @8petros @alxd @Anaphory @fiction

    Again, I think criticism is productive. If readers find omissions, I still consider that a way to contribute to their creative process. I hope that just as I can appreciate that this doesn't suit your tastes, you might find this worth recommending to ppl whose tastes you don't share. For folks looking for an OSR game that presents a positive version of anarchy, I think they'll find the themes of infrastructure, community, etc more present than you'd imagine.

    FullyAutomatedRPG ,
    @FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

    @alxd @8petros @Anaphory @fiction I haven't. I'll check it out right now!

    FullyAutomatedRPG ,
    @FullyAutomatedRPG@mstdn.games avatar

    @alxd @8petros @Anaphory @fiction Oh, actually I do know this one.

    I'm sure it's good, but it's too dark for me. I'm a big softy. I like settings where the only queer strife is the burden of managing drama amongst one's exhausting network of current, former, and future lovers in the welcoming, convivial world we all deserve.
