The Expanse series is narrated by Jefferson Mayes. He is absolutely magnificent and really does bring the books to life.

Expanse series as already mentioned and I'll throw in The Rivers Of London series, narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Absolutely glorious. Can't see how anyone could do the series better.

The one by Phil Dragash is magnificent. Truly a work of art and love.

So with renewable getting cheaper by the minute, how can we justify the cost of nuclear?

Renewable is going to be so cheap that losses in transmission over distance will be acceptable. Meanwhile here in UK we have costs for nuclear guaranteed for the next thirty odd years.

FatLegTed ,
@FatLegTed@piefed.social avatar

Yes it was back then, but it isn't now so we ought to weaning ourselves off of it rather than building new, which will cost many billions over their lifetime. Half of which will be spent building and then decommissioning.

In a couple of thousand years, if we are still here, our ancestors will curse us for the nuclear waste we are going to leave for them to clean up.

Sounds too good to be true - if it's legit, this is an excellent idea. Lets hope they can scale it for industry.

This is going to be a real problem - because the Daily Mail and such will be screaming that all the problems are still there 6 months later - never mind that they've taken 14 years to put in place. People like my ignorant and racist sister in law, whose answer to the issue of migrants is to 'Just shoot them'. These people really do just open their mouths and let the bile pour out. She'd never vote Labour as they are too common. Unfortunately there are plenty like her about. Totally selfish and only concerned with themselves and showing off to their friends.

Yes we do but anything with that smeghead Farage is not the way to go.

'I want to push back on the 50% figure. Most Americans don't even vote. Maybe 50% of "voters" say fuck yeah, but even that isn't accurate since he didn't even win the popular vote.'

Semantics. If he gets in the rest of the world will associate Americans with him. Because he won the election. The fact that he manipulated, rigged, coerced or whatever is neither here nor there.
It's the same way that we tend to associate all Russians with Putin, Chinese with Xi and the British with whoever is in the seat this week.
Just over 50% (of the people that voted) were in favour of Brexit but now that label and it's repercussions are associated with all of us. If everyone that didn't want it had voted, we'd still be in the EU.

This is why it's so important to vote.

And to have honest and accountable politicians, although I may have stepped into fantasy here.

FatLegTed ,

Because people buy them, they won't stop making them whilst they sell. Stop buying them and they'll stop making them.
It's not like the are necessary.

European made batteries could be 60% less carbon intensive than Chinese, researchers urging Europe to support investments ( www.transportenvironment.org )

Onshoring the EV supply chain to Europe would cut the emissions of producing a battery by 37% compared to a China-controlled supply chain, according to new analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E). This carbon saving rises to over 60% when renewable electricity is used. Producing Europe’s demand for battery cells and...

We need to wean ourselves from anything made in China - difficult as seemingly everything is made there. They do not have our best interests at heart. Look at the post regarding the steel plant in Serbia.

I despise that man with an irrational hatred. I've never met him, don't know anyone that's met him.

They are limbering up - this has been coming for some years but the west will sleepwalk into it. We should have distanced ourselves them years ago instead of sucking up to them for cheap oil and gas.

We ignore the warning signs at our peril.

Excellent stuff - we need more of this sort of system worldwide. Not just relying on one or two sources. Stick some panels up and a couple of wind turbines and extra can be pushed to the system or stored.

'China has called the allegations "malicious slander".

Counter-terrorism police have described the allegations as "very serious".'
They would do though wouldn't they?

Why has it taken over a year to charge them?

FatLegTed ,

Fair enough - but a year? That seems a bit excessive - I hope they've been locked away for the duration.

Yes, that's the saddest thing. They have to prepare for a known criminal to literally bulldoze his way over all the good work that has been done. He doesn't even understand what's been done, he just knows that it was done by people that aren't on his side. So it must be bad.

After a reccomendation on here, I'm working my way through the World War series by Harry Turtledove. Currently halfway through Striking The Balance. Excellent series but I must admit to skimming in places in this volume. I feel that it's been padded out a bit. Will keep on though and finish the series. Excellent author and really does go into alternative history scenarios with detail.

Also, as I have since about 1967, constantly reading The Lord Of The Rings ;-)
