John Deere has laid off roughly 1000 workers so far this year.

But the company reported a profit of over $10 billion in 2023.

Its CEO received $26.7 million in total compensation.

And it spent over $7 billion on stock buybacks.

Textbook corporate greed.

I would be willing to bet it’s the increased use of robotics and AI in the production line. This is a trend that is bound to continue and it demands new attitudes towards the rights and welfare of the workers.

They need to use this huge profit to::

  1. either produce more tractors if the market can stand it.
  2. Increase workers wages substantially.
  3. invest more money in R&D to make even better, and more tractors and other equipment.
  4. diversify into other manufactured equipment

This applies to all manufacturing capitalist companies like JD

Otherwise, the old hard. nosed greedy capitalist process, coupled with robotics and AI, is going to lead to a major disaster for normal working people

You pick up the attitudes of those around you and make them your own. It’s not until society changes and evolves into a more kind and caring era that you too will pick up on what’s happening, and what’s now accepted, and if you’ve got half of a brain you will make these attitudes your own and so become a better person.

We progress so little independent of others. Some people believe that if they had been alive 200 years ago, they would’ve really kicked ass and sorted out all the racism and bigotry that was so common then.

Naturally, they are deluding themselves.

Yes so many people today are incapable of processing information and learning. They are trapped in their own little rabbit hole worlds and nothing you do or say can reach them and bring them out. Very scary.

What sort of traumas are you referring to?

I would’ve thought that social media, video games and Hollywood are just as much to blame. Everything is predigested for them.

These days it seems to an oldie like me that a child is not taught to think, debate or reason. I hope I’m quite wrong here.

To lose in a debate with your friends or adversaries can make you feel like a total idiot but you have to have these experiences to learn. I think they tend to try and protect children from these bad but necessary defeats and Smackdowns.

You need to be able to think and discuss logically, and compassionately too, to really be a functioning citizen as part of a democracy

The federal government is tightening its restrictions on air pollution.

Their justification? It will save lives and strengthen the economy by reducing hospitalizations and lost workdays.

More of this, please! We should apply this logic to clean the air indoors too.

6 February 1942 | A Dutch Jewish boy, Levie Swart, was born in Amsterdam.

In August 1942 he was deported to Auschwitz and, after selection, murdered in a gas chamber. His elder sister, Frouwke was killed with him.

And yet we are following the lead of politicians and captains of industry, rather than scientists and the medical profession.

I’ve never felt so ashamed of being genetically related to these grubs.
