Interestingly, in europe this seems to vary by country!

I was just thinking that I wasn't sure which was correct, but it seems both are actually acceptable in Germany although after the number is preferred

I grew up on a farm and this was the ultimate defense against geese.

They are much lighter than you, so if you can get them off the ground (neck or feet ideally) they can't do anything

It has it's own challenges, sure... but english isn't even remotely close to being the hardest language to learn

The spelling is messed up, it has (like virtually every language) a bunch of exceptions to rules, but the grammar has been hugely simplified over the past 1000 years.

Not to mention that the biggest advantage to learning languages is familiarity and the fact that English is, well, everywhere makes it easier.

Sure Esperanto is easier, but for most of the world something like Japanese would be muuuuuch harder

For any sort of online banking you generally need a password.

A lot of banks these days are online only.

Honestly, I know you mean we'll but I find statements like this extremely dangerous and damaging.

There isn't some 'international council of men' that could collectively sort anything out. Ideas like blaming the whole gender is part of the reason why we have a rise in far-right sentiment among young men, as it's easy to feel like the world is against you for things that you personally have no say in. Young men (just like anyone else) need support, and not to be blamed for bad-behavior of others!

Instead it's up to those of us (the vast majority) who don't represent toxic masculinity to set a compassionate example

The issue is that most people in despair are inclined to vote for a massive change. They just want anything different than the current status quo.

At the moment in the USA, only the right is offering substantial, systematic change. As awful as it sounds to centrists and the left (I.e. the majority of the population), they don't offer any substantial alternative.

We're basically at a point where the current status quo/political center WILL be replaced by something else. Centrists need to realise that the only alternative to right wing change is left wing change...

ECB , (edited )

I agree, they don't currently. The problem is that most also don't want right wing change, they just haven't realised that one or the other is inevitable.

They'll probably realise too late, but many would prefer left wing change to right wing change. The problem is, that there just isn't any substantial left wing options being offered, so they'll go with the right wing option by default.

I went on a whim to hear him speak back in 2008 and was so impressed ended up voting for him.

Granted, this was in Vermont, so it was already 100% clear that Obama was going to win the state.

I loved the books and found the netflix series to be a pretty enjoyable westernization of them.

There were a few changes/choices that were a bit strange or missed the point, but overall it's worth watching

When they say something like "60 days battery life" what they mean is using the device for half an hour everyday for 60 days.

OP is arguing that it would make more sense to just say the continuous use battery life, which in the above example would be 30 hours (60 × 0.5)

ECB ,

That's true for the US but not everywhere else

You've basically just described golf's superior cousin: disc golf

Interesting mix of kilometers and inches...

As a fan of both tofu and basically anything fermented....this sounds great!

People forget that there was a sizable "Bernie or Trump" crowd as well. Essentially people that just want ANY change from the permanent status-quo we've had for the last 30-40 years.

ECB ,

There are plenty of people in your situation (I'm also one of them), but the fact is that (unless you're at the very top of the pyramid) nearly everyone (including people like us) is a bit worse off than they would have been at a comparable stage in life 30 - 60 years ago.

I had to work hard and make sacrifices to make it, however with my qualifications my parents (and even moreso my grandparents) generation would have just walked into secure, high-paying jobs with real prospects of advancement. Instead I've got to constantly be switching jobs and looking out for myself in order to not fall behind. I know the rules of the game, so I do what I have to do.

Now just imagine people who 50 years ago would have been 'making it with sacrifices and hard work', since (virtually) everyone is now a bit worse off, their situation has shifted to 'underwater despite sacrifices and hard work'.

TLDR: The average millennial is poorer than past generations and it's harder to make it than before. This doesn't mean that there aren't large amount of individual millennials (like us) who DO make it, although even for this group (unless they are at the top of the pyramid) it's harder than before.

Why not? Self-determination is important. Countries split up all the time, the US isn't special.

If they genuinely want to leave, I'm all for letting them.

ECB , (edited )

"we fought a war about this 160 years ago, so you can't have self-determination"

I agree with you about their politics within the US, but hell yeah they should be able to leave if there is popular support for it.

ECB ,

Seriously, it's wild to me that people are against this.

The right to self-determination is important, regardless of what an old document (the US constitution in this case) says. Tons of countries (including the US!) became independent despite 'not being allowed to'.

Also -- think of what cutting off Texas would do for the American political balance.... we might actually get to pass progressive legislation for once!

ECB ,

Why though? If we let them leave, there wouldn't be any reason to not recognize them.

Even countries that weren't 'allowed' to leave usually get recognized eventually. Kosovo is a decent example, since Serbia is adamant that they are still part of Serbia, but they declared independence around 15 years ago and roughly half of the UN recognizes them as independent.
