There is no refusal to hand over power in the UK. We don’t riot and kill people. We don’t exhort and incite violence. We peacefully transfer power. No muss, no fuss.

Its very much worth saying - and for other nations to watch - that the UK political transition is peaceful and orderly. No trouble or violence, no mass demos on the day of election, no police at most polling stations, just ordinary people going to vote. Humour is often a gentle weapon in the UK, sometimes used to merciless effect.

The Independent: Rishi Sunak is working towards an autumn general election on 10 October, The Independent has been told

"It is understood that the PM is unlikely to wait until mid-November, since it would clash with US presidential election"

"The October date would also throw party conference season into disarray, which is a key opportunity for all the major parties to campaign and fundraise ahead of the upcoming election"
