A Spix’s #macaw perches in a tree in a breeding facility in Curaçá, eastern #Brazil. The species is clinging to life: declared #extinct in the wild, it now mainly persists in protected habitats, although Brazil hopes to re-establish a wild population before long.
There’s a new #kakapo island! On Friday we released four males to Te Puka-Hereka/Coal Island, the southern-most island in Fiordland, with Ngāi Tahu and the Coal Island Trust. This is to help relieve the pressure for space on the main breeding islands. #conservation#parrots
Exciting times in the #kakapo world as we roll out our new transmitter design, with much longer battery life and smarter #technology, thanks to the brilliant DOC Electronics Team. Here’s site lead Petrus with 5 year old Ako. #conservation#parrots 📸 Dani Whitaker
Our team are braving adverse weather to change #kakapo transmitters on Anchor Island. Several birds have been roosting in holes - perhaps for better shelter (they also roost under vegetation and up trees). Here’s Waa underground - photo by Maddy Whittaker. #conservation#parrots
A serious flaw with the #fediverse over #meta products like #instagram and #facebook is there is a serious lack of #parrots over here. #Cockatiels and other parrots bring such great joy to my life it's too hard to stay away from these other platforms.
