A Spix’s perches in a tree in a breeding facility in Curaçá, eastern . The species is clinging to life: declared in the wild, it now mainly persists in protected habitats, although Brazil hopes to re-establish a wild population before long.

There’s a new island! On Friday we released four males to Te Puka-Hereka/Coal Island, the southern-most island in Fiordland, with Ngāi Tahu and the Coal Island Trust. This is to help relieve the pressure for space on the main breeding islands.

Our team are braving adverse weather to change transmitters on Anchor Island. Several birds have been roosting in holes - perhaps for better shelter (they also roost under vegetation and up trees). Here’s Waa underground - photo by Maddy Whittaker.
