In today's Financial Times. Quelle surprise...

"Labour does not want Thames Water to fall into public ownership, shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds has said, as the UK’s biggest water supplier teeters on the brink of collapse.
Reynolds, who would play a leading role in Labour’s relations with business if the party won the July 4 UK general election, said he “wouldn’t want to see a nationalisation” of Thames Water"

"I was once hopeful about politics. Under Corbyn, I believed a better Britain was possible. As a person who grew up working class, I found that his desire to scrap tuition fees really spoke to me.. Nationalised railways would have meant I could afford the commute to work. What’s more, he had a clear stance on Gaza.
With Starmer, I haven’t felt remotely the same"

When the election is between a Labour party trying to unseat a Conservative one after what it considers to be its own failed leftwing experiment, that tendency to strip politics of all values ...becomes even more pronounced. The result is that by hewing as close as possible to established economic and cultural norms as set by the Tories in order to win back voters, Labour disfranchises others and makes a calculation that they don’t matter"

Started the day at the Luke Akehurst protest.

Ended the day by cycling to Seaham beach and having sorbet.

Akehurst did not go down well with local members, even those that gave him a chance. Evasive, defensive and cagey said one local member. Then his car was blocked by protesters and his wife said this https://x.com/NewhamIndParty/status/1797330244732395573

The cycle ride from there to Seaham was mostly lovely, except the B1404 which was awful.

"In 2022, days after Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was murdered by an Israeli sniper, Ruth Anderson wrote an article on Index on Censorhip’s website about the matter. Neither Israel nor the Israeli army were mentioned."
