David Kurtz on why Trump continues to be so appealing to so many Americans:

"It’s in moments like these that the overconfident diagnoses and simplistic solutions of someone like Donald Trump hold their greatest allure. ... He’s a chaos monster: the more of it he creates, the greater the need for the snake oil palliatives he offers. He’ll make you sick to sell you his bogus curatives."

As Timothy Burke notes, for the most part, those pressuring university administrators to crack down on student protesters "are going wholly undiscussed in the national news coverage." The media mantra is that the protests are causing "chaos." This ignores that the chaos is being created by administrators dragging in police to squelch peaceful protests.

But nearly everything resembling 'chaos' has come in the crackdowns."

"These protests have been nothing short of a godsend for the GOP, which can use them to pretend to care about antisemitism, divert attention from the thing the students are actually protesting, continue their long war against higher education, and bitch about Kids Today, who supposedly lack the good sense and civility that characterized the youth of, well, whenever you were young."

This is what Republicans have done for virtually all the years I've been a voter, 1968 to the present:

They manufacture nonexistent chaos when Democrats are in control, to justify wresting control of the nation and handing itl to a minority fiercely resistant to discussions of human rights and democracy.

With Trump, economic elites have become brazen about their intent to dismantle democracy and establish iron rule. The chaos mantra serves their ends.

Vielleicht kommt was raus, dann gibt es Anteile!

By overwhelming people with the sheer volume and vulgarity of his antics, Trump and his team are trying to burn out the part of our brains that can discern truth from fiction, right from wrong, good from evil. His campaign’s goal is to turn voters into moral zombies who can no longer tell the difference between Stormy and Hunter or classified documents and personal laptops, who cannot parse what a “bloodbath” means, who no longer have the ability to be shocked when a political leader calls other human beings “animals” and “vermin.” Trump isn’t worried that all of this will cause voters to have a kind of mental meltdown: He’s counting on it. He needs ordinary citizens to become so mired in moral chaos and so cognitively paralyzed that they are unable to comprehend the disasters that would ensue if he returns to the White House — Tom Nichols

The on Tues cleared the way for Texas to immediately begin enforcing one of the nation’s harshest immigration laws, which opponents say would disrupt more than a century of control over borders.

While Wendy’s plans to price gouge you with Uber-style surge pricing, it’s simultaneously enriching wealthy shareholders with a $500 million stock buyback program.

That’s the thing about corporate greed: It’s shameless.

Derek Thompson quotes researcher Michael Bang Peterson et al.:

"These [need-for-chaos] individuals are not idealists seeking to tear down the established order so that they can build a better society for everyone. Rather, they indiscriminately share hostile political rumors as a way to unleash chaos and mobilize individuals against the established order that fails to accord them the respect that they feel they personally deserve.”

"To sum up their worldview, Petersen quoted a famous line from the film The Dark Knight: 'Some men just want to watch the world burn.'”

There are, in short, some voters, and perhaps a growing cadre of them in the US, who need chaos, who thrive on tearing things up. "Some men just want to watch the world burn," and they behave accordingly as they make political choices and promote their chosen chaos agents. Then this mentality is allowed to thrive and spread, danger follows.
