WHOA US Treasury Dept just sanctioned leadership at 🇷🇺Russian company .

Comes on heels of yesterday's Commerce Dept. ban on sales of their antivirus to the US.

Huge-but-somewhat-anticipated blow to whose fortunes in the US have been falling since the 2017 DHS binding directive to remove their products from gov systems.

Fascinating to see if other governments echo some of these actions.

3/. It's not just that Antivirus products don't provide users the kind of security they think they do...

Antivirus products themselves have, by design, a ridiculously invasive view into what you are doing on your computer.

For the company to keep detecting new things, lots of that info gets uploaded.

And the access to your filesystem doesn't necessarily end there.

Under-appreciated privacy and security concern for anyone with an antivirus installed.

4/ Maybe you sort of trust the company that makes your antivirus to not be quietly taking copies of your sensitive project files for a foreign intelligence service.

Well, here's the thing, the kind of access that gets to your system combined with the need to run checks against files means that it has a really juicy surface for attack.

Hence the stream of research pointing out the many, many ways that popular antivirus products can be exploited.

@jsrailton kaspersky is trusted brand for securing PCs for years and having large user base in the US however in war time you can't trust your enemies to secure you!

@jsrailton like isn't something that can be fixed outside of extensive , , & workups.

In fact it's easier to bootstrap annentirely new identity than trying to uninstall such persistent shite!

That being said, providers are just the newest sales reps and everything against them applies to as well...

So sad that @tomscott was just naively debunking them years ago...

The constant sown by VPN and providers is so rampant that I'd not be surprised if one day both would finally be made illegal for all the right reasons:
