“Human beings, Adina faxes, did not think their lives were challenging enough, so they invented roller coasters.” Currently reading Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino. With lines like that, what's not to love? @bookstodon#bookstodon#scifi
#FinishedReading the followup to #AnnLeckie 's Imperial Radch trilogy. Although it is set in a different milieu, very much recommended to read the Ancillary books first because the conclusion of that series is a plot point here. Leckie is one of the best in #SciFi for inventing alternative cultures and seeing how they can clash or cooperate; here the high concepts are wrapped in a fun and twisty, somewhat noirish, tale of murder and politics #Bookstodon@bookstodon
Krull (1983) is more a sword-and-planet than a sword-and-sorcery film and has a lot in common with Star Wars. It includes every fantasy cliché imaginable but it looks fabulous and has energy, enthusiasm and style. And lots of action. Pure fun.
I've been feeling nostalgic lately and watching videos about Red Dwarf, because there's a certain segment of the US who grew up watching it when PBS brought it over to the US market and now it's like TV "comfort food."
Anyway, three things about this nostalgia binge:
I didn't know Patrick Stewart was aware of the show, much less a fan. Seeing "Captain Picard" do a Rimmer salute blew my mind.
I didn't know there was a US pilot. I'm kind of glad it didn't get picked up, honestly.
I just realized I've never tasted Indian food. And yet, somehow, all the talk of different curry dishes is making my mouth water. I don't even know if I'd like them...
What if proving sentience to the other inhabitants of the universe was just like Eurovision?
This is the first goofy scifi I've read that actually comes close to living up to Adams' Hitchhikers without overdoing it the whole way through. Parts are wryly cutting, lambasting those who deserve it, like officious governmental cogs too full of...
Latest read:
Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner.
Continuing my quest to fill in blanks in my classic sci-fi knowledge. This is one of those books that will stay with me. It packs a punch.
System Collapse, by Martha Wells. You are a sentient construct that can pass as human, but you really don’t like humans much (other than their TV shows) but nonetheless endeavor to keep them from dying at each other’s hands in the f***ed up world they created. 4 of 5 library cats 🐈 🐈 🐈 🐈. We're less than a week away from the Kindle edition release of "The Spiral and The Threads" and there's never been a better time to explore The Nod/Wells Timelines!
The world is a strange mix of space-faring and Victorian, but not steampunk. The plot twists were actually pretty surprising and more macabre than I was expecting, even given the name of the book is Revenger. The book was creative, and it was delightful to read YA without a romance involved and to just see this young woman grow into who she needed to be. That woman is quite engaging and powerful.
One thing I really like about Mastodon is by following hashtags I get tons of great book and show recommendations. Didn't really get that on the birdsite. #scifi#bookstodon
