The world's oldest forests are in New York state. We've known this since the 19th century when the town of Gilboa became famous for fossil forests that were around 380 million years old; in 2018, scientists revealed evidence of a 385-million-year-old forest in nearby Cairo. Last month that received funding to protect it as a first step towards turning it into an educational site. This summer, the Gilboa Museum will hold its first fossil walks.
