Knowing you’re an alternate from the start definitely could affect attentiveness. Many years ago I was on a jury, and learned only when deliberations began that I was an alternate. If I’d known earlier I might not have been intentionally inattentive, but learning I was an alternate certainly put a damper on how I felt about things.
