Sam Altman’s vision for AI proliferation will require a lot more computation and the energy to power it.
He admitted it at Davos, but he said we shouldn’t worry: an energy breakthrough was coming, and in the meantime we could just use “geoengineering as a stopgap.” That should set off alarm bells.
@parismarx They are investing in WASTING energy derailing sustainable innovation & ensuring insufficient alternatives & a climate change crisis. It should be a crime against the earth & humanity to exploit resources so wastefully. They shouldn’t be allowed to do this until they can power it now sustainably, not at some point in the future that they are actually preventing.
It’s putting the cart before the horse. Building a house starting with the roof & no foundation or support in sight.
@parismarx So the short version is that his investors are asking him questions like "we've got to do something to use less fossil fuels or we'll all die, but your AI is the most energy-hungry thing since crypto, how will you prosper?" so he's just going to forecast fusion or zero-point energy or something for as long as needed until the hype machine has moved on to something else.
@parismarx I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that AI itself will provide the "energy breakthrough" he's referring to, so we need to simply have faith that it will happen and therefore give it as much energy as it needs in the meantime.
I'm starting to wonder if Davos is just a geekshow for the obscenely rich. I've seen 3 interviews from there so far that favor Trumpian authoritarianism.
@parismarx These LLMs aren't going to give us the breakthrough on Nuclear Fusion that Sam is pushing, the man is a grifter, using Science Fiction for his scams.
