Everyone acts like I'm "From the Great Depression" because I want to take the T-bone home from the steakhouse to make split pea soup but what THEY do not understand is the best split pea soup in the universe is made with a 2-inch thick proper NYC steakhouse T-bone. It's not like I'm going around back to get them with Pica's ilk.

Take the bone home.

If steakhouses had any sense they'd make soap too. Brand it with their logo.

Soup Tomorrow!

@futurebird soap? Or did you mean soup?

@futurebird Fmr MIL made a ham on vacation in Hawaii, and put the bone in one of those oversize ziploc bags in her carry-on to make soup when she got home

got all kinds of funny looks going through security

@futurebird Interesting! I traditionally think of ham bones for split pea soup, but I agree that it should not go to waste

@futurebird they probably couldn't use a bone from someone else's plate and use that to make soup for someone else.

@martin_piper

Fancy steak is served on a big platter and they put little bits on your plate. No one person has the bone on their plate.

@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird except for those who just use the serving platter as their plate. :)

@martin_piper

My brother wasn't invited so we didn't have that problem LOL.

I can't believe I've never thought to do this!!

@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@futurebird I tend to use veal shank for it.

Lil bit of bone with marrow in the middle.

Though it seems the T-bone has some marrow on it too.

@futurebird mind sharing the recipe?

@futurebird Mmm - I LOVE pea soup. I've only ever made it with a ham bone, though - I've never had a T-bone, but I'm tempted to get one just to try the soup making with it.

@futurebird My father liked to make split pea soup with a ham hock, which he got from a butcher shop that had a pickle barrel.

@futurebird I love it. I just took a tomahawk steak bone home last Saturday from a way too hipster for its own good steakhouse. You are right on.

@futurebird Oh that's clever.
